I have a GP 100 that I shoot 158 gr. Kieth type cast bullets. I would pay no attention to your uncle's opinion about the .357 magnum being a pea shooter, for there was a time in the late 30's that the .357 mag was the most powerful handgun cartridge in existence and was used for many years to hunt bears with, so I would definitely not classify it as a pea shooter.

For $375 dollars, you would be getting a good deal if the weapon is in sound shape.

Those are awesome guns. Small enough to carry concealed, but with the power of the .357 and big enough to hold on to (unlike a J frame).

You should check prices. I don't think I paid much more than that at Bass Pro....~$425 maybe (2008).

(I just checked current prices) Sounds like a good deal as RC said. Make sure it hasn't been shaving lead, then buy it!

Good to go as far as I am concerned. Fits well in IWB holster or in the pocket. It took a while but since I have the DAO with shaved hammer holsters are less likly to be at your local Gun Shop. I did find a Like New special holster that has the strap that is designed for the shaved hammer on ebay and also bought the Highnoon pocket holster,

The weight and balance makes it feel better in the hand than a SW and the kick is not noticed.

Absolutely LOVE mine! It's my edc. Gotta admit, tho, I leave it in the car door most of the time. Can't bring it into work, yanno.

It's a straight shooter, mild recoil compared to some light .357s, sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

I have one with the 2.25 inch barrel. As everyone says it is built like a tank---and as heavy as one in the pocket. I do use it for an every day carry in the winter but not in the warmer weather. I use a belt holster in the winter. I have faith in the 357 as a defense caliber and as a hunting load on deer( not with the short barrel). I also have a S&W 686 in .357, it has a 4 inch barrel and adjustable sights. I have equal confidence in both weapons and do not see one as superior to the other. They are just a little different.

ill be getting it tomorow, its a 3'' barrel said he hasent shot but maybe a box of shells threw it. im only 21, but ill be using it to take my ccw class, will just load it with .38s for that purpose. i figure if shtf i can grab it and a shotgun and be good to go.

Great gun, you won't be disappointed. Small enough to easily conceal but big enough to hold and shoot comfortably. And with Ruger's reliability, to boot.

The reason I will always prefer Smith and Taurus (Brazilian Smiths) revolvers is the direction that the cylinder release pushes. Colts are a pain in the ass to pull back on the cylinder release to reload so a speed reload is pretty much impossible and don't even bother to try it with a Dan Wesson; I have never fired a Ruger swing-out cylinder but this one looks like it might be similar to the Colt's release?

SP101 pushes in. The cylinder also locks better than most.

I'm fond of Ruger. The GP100 also pushes in. Yes, reloads might be fractionally slower than with an S&W (arguably faster than a Colt), but if I have to reload in a hurry after 5 rounds of 357, like as not I'm already toast. If I KNOW I'm going to a gun fight, it'll be a 1911 supplemented with an AR or something akin to it.

The quickest reload is another loaded gun.

Nothing any of you experts will say can detract from the value of being able to quickly and positively reload, whether in a USPSA match or combat. It is nice to learn that the Ruger follows common sense to reloading. Speedloaders and moon-clips are your friend.

geeeze, I'm not trying to argue with Barney Phife and his one bullet theory here. If you don't think being able to positively and quickly reload, especially under duress, has value then live long and prosper but you better keep your fingers crossed.

Not to argue, but it has saved my life. Nothing in this world is quicker than a spare loaded weapon.

In fact, a rapid reload is generally faster for me that a second weapon unless the weapon happens to be in hand. Safely holster a partially depleted weapon, for whatever reason or drop it and run the risk of an ad, draw the second weapon and deploy it? Maybe dude, but you obviously don't shoot with the same crowd that I shoot with. Mobile Pistol Shooters Association has more representative wins at surrounding level lll USPSA matches than any other club I know of and I could not possibly draw and deploy a second weapon nearly as fast as any C-class shooter can reload and get back into the fight. We do this EVERY weekend repeatedly, so I'm not guessing about it. Oh, if you ask anyone that knows me personally, they'll probably mention that I almost always carry two pistols.

Games are fine, they teach what I call inline skills.

    The real world is different.

    YMMV
