So I'm enjoying my vacation and was out doing my yard work today. While running weed-eater near my apple trees I had a strange feeling of gravel hitting my legs. I look down and find I am in the middle of Yellow Jacket swarm !!!! Oh Sheet! Amazingly enough God has created us with the hidden ability to fly!I take to flight toward the house and I managed not to get stung!!!! I must have had 200 of them on or around me at last glance. So the bad part, Im home alone today and I am deathly alergic to bee stings,,,,,, and I have no Epie autoinjector on hand.... wow what a close call. I havent been stung in 20 years, not even close to it. Well hopefully it will be another 20 years before the next time. Thinking I might run down and buy a power ball ticket after this run of luck! Ok back to my vacation, I think i might go sky diving this evening...
One very lucky Quig..... I would say.... Better also get a couple of Epie Pens, for the refer, just in case......
Bet the old adrenalin was pumping by the time you got inside the house. Glad you're okay. Now to figure out how to get rid of that nest without getting stung.
You know I also figured out the intelligence of my GSD today as well. When Hunter noticed me taking to flight, he didn't even look back and took to flight as well...LOL
A buddy once sent me some info on Yeller Jackets. Seems once the first one tags you, he's marked for the rest of the swarm to zero in! Thank goodness bee stings (and others) don't bother me too much. Been hit by Florida sand scorpions, wasps, and once got swarmed (while under a car working) by fire ants! Those wee barstids are aptly named! I too am alergic. Luckily not severely....100mg of diphenhydramine works pretty well for me. One time I tore into a ground wasp nest and that time I needed RAPID transport to the hospital. Doctors lost count after 180 sting marks.....though I am sure some were two rounds in one hole (those little bastards know how to group their shots). After a few rounds of Epi and IV diphenhydramine then a few bags of IV solution, I was back to seeing and breathing normally. Glad to hear you didnt get hit Quigley!!
He just knew he had to keep one step ahead. A few years ago I got nailed by yellow jackets, was fast enough to outrun all but 18 of them. I have about four hours to get medical assistance, or kim chee is cool comparatively. That time, it took a couple cc's of synthetic adrenalin and a dose of pain killer. Me no likee much.
I got nailed by weekend before last. I was hiking out in the woods and felt a warm...hot prick on my Achilles tendon. I thought I was snake bit. I look down and there's a bee on my sock...I squish it with the top of my boot...ZAPP!! Damn...it's gone, the ZAPP again...WTF?? As it turned out, the first sting was from one that had crawled down in the space between my boot and tendon...my walking motion squished it against my boot so it stung me. I must've had it pinned, then moved and it tagged me again. Those stings leave quite a hole...very easy to see. What a way to ruin a good hike. It's my damn luck that bee would get down in a place like that...it was like an X-wing fighter going for the exhaust tube on the Death Star. This past weekend, I went back...looking for the nest. In my pack I had two spray cans of bee tonic. I didn't find them...I will continue to go back until a find something. I hold grudges worse than a McCoy....
I was camping a week or so ago up in the Cherokee National Forest and noticed a lot of yellow jackets and hornets around camp. I rode my motorcycle to Vonore and got a can of flying insect spray and amused myself shooting them down.
Sea, if you really want to be a sadistic bastard, get a can of 3M spray adhesive. They can't fly and drop immediatly, but are still very much alive and very pissed off. Of course, you have to be really close, because the spray diffuses quickly. I just got stung this weekend. Pretty strange occurance- I was folding up a lawn chair and thought I pinched myself with it. It was around midnight and I was gathering up my stuff at the end of a bonfire. I have no idea what type of bee or where he came from, or where it went. The puffy little O was on my arm for about 10 minutes or so, so I know it was a sting.
Wow. I was weed eating with the saw blade attachment on a hillside back in TN one weekend and the blade ripped open a yellow jacket nest in the ground. I got stung 27 times and was running around the house screaming like a baby.
