    Sea Shepherd whale activist on the run vows to continue work
    BERLIN —
    The founder of environmental group Sea Shepherd vowed Tuesday to continue disrupting Japan's whaling fleet when it heads for the southern oceans this winter, despite authorities in at least three countries seeking his arrest.
    Paul Watson, 61, was detained in Germany in May on a Costa Rican extradition warrant that accused him of endangering the crew of a fishing vessel in 2002.
    About ten days ago the Canadian, who sees himself as an advocate for whales, sharks and other marine animals, skipped bail after learning that Japan, too, was seeking his extradition from Germany.
    "I can serve my clients better at sea than in a Japanese prison cell and I intend to do just that," he said in a statement issued by his Friday Harbor, Wash.-based group, which didn't disclose his current location. "In December, our ships will sail forth for the ninth campaign to oppose the outlaw Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary."
    The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is a vast conservation area around Antarctica in which commercial whaling operations are banned.
    Watson said he believed the Japanese warrant related to the collision of a Japanese whaling support ship and a Sea Shepherd boat in January 2010. Sea Shepherd has accused the Japanese ship of deliberately ramming its futuristic, rocket-shaped boat, the Ady Gil, and eventually causing it to sink. The whalers deny the ramming accusation, saying the Ady Gil's captain deliberately put his vessel in their ship's path.
    Watson said he expects Japanese authorities "to exploit all avenues to find a way to stop" him.
    "I have, however, eluded them once again and I will continue to try and keep a step ahead of them, no matter what risks and costs have to be made," he said
    German authorities have issued a warrant for Watson's arrest after he failed to report to police, as required under his bail conditions which also included a (EURO)250,000 ($320,000) bond.

    He isn't in Friday Harbor, Quig... That is just where his base of Operations and Post Office Box is located.... Paul Watson is a Canadian National, I believe, but a Resident Alien, here in the US... Mostly he is a Pirate, and sails under "Flags of Convenience" as a non-Commercial Vessel, (Yacht/Pleasure Craft) where ever he can find a Nation that will allow him to register. The Dutch and a few other Nations, have pulled the Registry of his Vessels, after issues, from his exploits, were reported. Bail Recovery is usually 10-20% of the Bail Amount.... could be a nice hunk of change... for someone, if they could catch up with him.....

    Im just waiting for the Japanese to send a Navy vesel down there and put a couple holes in his hull. He keeps up his antics and there wont be a country anywhere that will alow his ships to dock.

    The only issue with that is, the Japanese do NOT have a Navy. Not since the end of WWII. What they do have is a Coastal Patrol Force, HOWEVER, that Unit is Restricted to Japanese Territorial Waters, by Japanese LAW. Japanese High Seas Fishing Vessels are also UnArmed, by Japanese LAW. You may have noticed that Mr. Watson has never returned to the North Atlantic, to mess with the Norwegian Whalers, since his encounter with a Norwegian Naval Frigate... it is AMAZING what happens when a 5" shell lands 30 ft off your bow, and the radio is saying "The next one goes thru the Pilothouse window".....Much easier, and safer, to go play with the unarmed Japanese....

    I just sent a message to the folks at the Discovery Channel asking that the 'Whale wars" show be pulled as it helped to fund a criminal. I will contact any advertisers on the show to let them know how disappointed I am over their support of a criminal.

    If this guy is right, he would be happy to go to court.

    And please don't go on about "Save the whales" The US allows bowheads to be killed right off the shore here in Alaska. If it is OK for one group....

    Japan DOES have a Navy (The "Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force"). They have destroyers, submarines and other ocean-capable ships. Where they are allowed to operate - that may be up to discussion. Ihave no doubt if the need arose to pursue this modern-day pirate across the sea, they have the ability to do so.

    Never doubt that the Japanese Commercial fishing vessels are armed and since they often cut others lines or foul them so badly that US fishermen go home empty handed, this in the Atlantic, they are not concerned about international law.

It operates four helicopter destroyers, eight guided-missile destroyers, thirty frigates, six light-frigates and sixteen attack submarines (SSK).[1][2] Despite its size the JMSDF is a defense force.

    If Japan decides to support their Whaling Ships then they have the resources.

    I believe Japan sent a warship of some kind to patrol for Somali pirates ..... some talk about mounting part of a mobile missle defense system on warships and positioning them against N Korea ....

    I remember we were training a metric TON of Japanese soldiers out in White Sands back in 2006. This has nothing to do with the topic, I just wanted to throw that out there.

    Why waste the 5"? Sea Shepard is not armored, an inert warhead on a Mk 16 motor would do nicely at minimum cost.
