I saw this on a blog a while ago and have been giving it some thought.

The scenario is that some PETA type let the lions, tigers and such loose from the zoo when tSHTF.

Something to consider, I doubt a .223 would be enough.

As The Shooting Wire reported, Baron Engraving, of Trumbell, Conn., engraved the slides of the entire lot of the 1,000 special Ruger LCPs in just four days. The engraving reads, "Coyote Special" and "A True Texan," in tribute to Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

As originally reported by The Austin-American Statesman, Sturm, Ruger and Co. has produced a special edition of its LCP pistol to commemorate the incident when Texas Governor Rick Perry, out for a morning jog, defended himself and his dog from a prowling coyote.

The shooting stirred up controversy, but Texas law states it's legal to kill coyotes when they threaten livestock or domestic animals.

You think a .380 will stop a lion or tiger ?

I think you will be lunch.

For CQB with something like that, 12 gauge is probably best (along with a pair of clean drawers). I know this is the firearms subforum, but I was considering something in a different vein for the same type of problem...wild dog packs in particular, but applies to any predator. Would anyone consider using poisoned bait around their fixed base for coyotes, wild dogs, or released predatory exotics? (Antifreeze, cyanide, etc) That may also be useful to keep rabid skunks, raccoons, etc under control.

The problem I see with poisons is keeping your dogs away, and also your neighbors/friends/allies dogs.

I see the 12 gauge as a home gun more than a carry gun, and am more concerned with the idea of meeting a released exotic while away from base.

I'm personally debating whether a .308 rifle or a .44 Magnum revolver is the better set-up.
More likely to carry the revolver all the time than a rifle.

This senerio, is similar to my living conditions, every day... We have BIG 4 legged predators living local 24/7/365... The main defensive weapon of choice around here is the 12Ga Pump Action Shotgun, with extended Tube Mag. Typical load-out is a #9 Birdshot in the chamber, and alternating 3" 00 Buck, and 1oz Slugs, thru the rest of the load. Then have a duplicate Load-out in the Stock Carrier.
Also works for 2 legged Varmints as well. Effective range for such a weapon is 10 Ft to 60 Yds. Plenty for our local AoO.... .... YMMV.....

I figure, if the wild animals ever escaped the zoo, they will have plenty of food to chase down besides me. Your greatest weapon is your mind: evade. If you shoot, using anything is better than nothing. There is no such thing as a perfect weapon to cover all scenarios...although the shotgun comes pretty darn close.

There used to be this board game called 'Scruples'--you'd be given a scenario and you have to decide on a course of action and why. There's more to it than that, but the concept of that game has always stuck with me. I would say that if I said this to most people, they'd probably think I was off my rocker, but, figure you guys/gals will understand: I'm constantly thinking of routes of egress, methods of action in certain scenarios (e.g., a car pulls up next to you on the sidewalk, a person is walking past you (do they keep going)) ...basically going over my options if I needed to quickly come up with a course of action.

Scenario, you're out for a walk and you smell something awful. You stop, look around, and see this...what do you do?

Remove myself 20 ft further from the Stripped Cat, and then deA** the area, for better places..... Fortunately they don't live around here.....

I turn off cartoons - or watch 'til the end when he finally gets the pretty cat he's been chasing. ;)

Turn and walk the other way. Skunks don't chase you down. At least that's been my experience. Wait a little bit until he/she has already crossed the path I was using and I can continue on my merry way. :)

People do assume skunk when you say bad smell, but skunks usually do not smell bad, only when bothered.

Our bears don't smell all that much, even at 20 ft.... (I suspect it mostly has to do with their diet)..... which is a lot closer than I normally choose to get, to our Brownie neighbors..... Now the Black ones, are a different breed altogether, and 20 ft is usually just inside their Startle Zone, so they are trying to move off, anyway....
We have locally, "The Three Amegos" a triple litter of Brownies that are now just 2.5 years old. There mother was killed, by an idiot local Native American, just before DenUp, their first summer. Few expected them to make it thru that winter, alive, but here they are..... So now we are a bit more watchful, as they grow up. Eventually they will become Rugs on someones Wall. AlaskaChick and I saw them just the other day, as we were coming back from the Beach Cabin, in the Rhino. They were running in front of us, about 30 yds, and then jumped off into the brush, as we went by.... A neighbor saw them, that next morning in his Stink-Cabbage patch, having Breakfast. It is fortunate that Bears go to sleep in October, around here, and we don't have to deal with them till the next May..... .....

After I check my six for the momma, then I would pull my Remington 270 BDL and shoot that juvenille bear right between the eyes.
