Without a doubt, one of the best threads I've read on the Monkey is this one because the analysis of the shooting was superb.

I ran across the following and it made me think of the above thread, so out of respect for the author, I'll start another. Obviously, having 13 rules is purely subjective--depending on who you are and your training, there could be more, or less. Some are useful, some are straight off a bumper-sticker. In any event, it's something you should think about on a personal level.

My own personal philosophy has been that you should never draw a gun to influence someone's behavior; if you have to draw the gun as a last resort, someone is in trouble and you should use the gun to neutralize the trouble-maker. This is "E" below and was shown in the above thread (though not in the courthouse shooting).

    A) Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.
    B) It’s always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
    C) Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.
    D) Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arms length.
    E) Never say “I’ve got a gun.” If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off.
    F) The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.
    G) The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win – cheat if necessary.
    H) Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets…You may get killed with your own gun, but he’ll have to beat you to death with it, cause it’ll be empty.
    I) If you’re in a gun fight:
If you’re not shooting, you should be loading.
If you’re not loading, you should be moving.
If you’re not shooting, moving or loading, you’re probably dead.
    J) In a life and death situation, do something…It may be wrong, but do something!
    K) If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?
    L) You can say ‘stop’ or ‘alto’ or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone’s head is pretty much a universal language.
    M) You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.

I have a problem with rule E. Before my most unfortunate boating accident where all my firearms were lost, I had several handguns, but none had a safety.

Witchdoctor's first link is the best.

Many people do not realize they are in a fight until they suffer the first blow or bullet. Be aware and recognize the threat before the other guy makes the first definitive move.

If there is one bad guy then there are likely others and at least one flanking or sneaking up behind (they already learned to not fight fair).

Once you decide to use force be deliberate and ruthless until all threats are stopped for sure. Sort of like the first rule: act ahead of your aggressor's OODA loop and stay ahead of it by moving and shooting.

I was more referring to saying "I've got a gun" to try and get someone to do your will. If you think you have no other recourse but to draw your weapon, then you should use it. Announcing you have a gun loses your element of surprise and puts you in jeopardy. The goal is for you to walk away and the bad guy not to. He's already made his choice to enter a deadly situation.

I just ignored the bit about the safety...similar to pumping a shell into a shotgun...hate that--why is your gun not loaded??

Case in point about trying to use a gun to negotiate with criminals...I'm glad it turned out well: http://www2.alabamas13.com/news/201...t-intruder-protect-herself-and-ch-ar-4355974/
