In the wake of last week's presidential election, thousands of Americans have signed petitionsseeking permission for their states to peacefully secede from the United States. The petitions were filed on We the People, a government website.
States with citizens filing include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Oddly, folks from Georgia have filed twice. Even stranger, several of the petitions come from states that went for President Barack Obama.
The petitions are short and to the point. For example, a petition from the Volunteer State reads: "Peacefully grant the State of Tennessee to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government." Of all the petitions, Texas has the most signatures so far, with more than 23,000.
Of course, this is mostly a symbolic gesture. The odds of the American government granting any state permission to go its own way are on par with winning the lottery while getting hit by a meteor while seeing Bigfoot while finding gluten-free pizza that tastes like the real thing.
An article from WKRC quotes a University of Louisville political science professor who explained that these petitions aren't uncommon. Similar petitions were filed following the 2004 and 2008 elections. Still, should the petitions garner 25,000 signatures in a month, they will require an official response from the Obama administration.
From the We the People site:
The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it's sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.
Not everybody who wants to secede is polite enough to write a petition. Peter Morrison, treasurer of the Hardin County (Texas) Republican Party, wrote a post-election newsletter in which he urges the Lone Star State to leave the Union.
"We must contest every single inch of ground and delay the baby-murdering, tax-raising socialists at every opportunity. But in due time, the maggots will have eaten every morsel of flesh off of the rotting corpse of the Republic, and therein lies our opportunity... Why should Vermont and Texas live under the same government? Let each go her own way in peace, sign a free trade agreement among the states and we can avoid this gut-wrenching spectacle every four years."

If I recall correctly, when Texas joined the union of States in 1846, they specifically retained the right to return to the Republic of Texas at any point in the future. Seems like instead of petitioning the Feds, they should simply call for a State of Texas convention and decide in or out.......then send the Feds the results.

I think it could have been settled in court in 1861 if the hotheads hadn't played into Northern hands by firing on Ft. Sumter.

White House may respond to Texas secession petition

Looks like the Obama administration may have to respond to a petition seeking the green light for Texas to secede from the United States—one of 20 such requests filed on the official White House website since Election Day.
At the time of the writing of this post, the Texas secession petition had garnered 25,318 signatures—above the White House's self-imposed rules for requiring a reply.
(A "Recount the election!" petition filed Nov. 10 had 16,238 signatures. "Regulate Internet Pornography"? Not a big winner. It was filed Nov. 4 and had only 501 signatures.)
The White House may opt out of replying. Under its own rules, "To avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition."
Other secession petitions include requests for Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan, Colorado, Oregon, New Jersey, North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama and New York. (Spoiler alert: No, the White House won't approve secession.)
Here's the text of the Texas petition:
The U.S. continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the U.S. suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect its citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

uhhh....you don't "file" a petition for secession; you just do it. then you fight, because you will have to.

There are many ways to 'fight'. Taking up arms is the least effective, IMHO......you'll simply get crushed, ala 1861-65.

But what if non-violent total lack of co-operation happened ? What if no federal taxes were collected, nor forwarded to DC ? What if all federal laws were ignored ? Can the feds arrest the entire State of Texas without looking like idiots ?

What if Texas merely pointed to their original agreement on joining the union and simply said "we wish to exercise the option we retained, and return to the Republic of Texas ? Rule of law and all.....no taking up arms.

Of course, this won't happen.....because the Feds have been smart enough to gather enough Texas hogs ( and hogs in the other 49 States ) to feed at the trough who will never agree to cut off the feed. How many getting EBT benefits would vote to cut them off ?
How many getting social security and medicare would vote to cut it off ?

    About zero.

True, independent Texans simply don't exist anymore, save perhaps a tiny fraction of one percent.....and the Feds know it....and all these internet petitions don't amount to a spec on a gnats backside.

Independence ( and the huge responsibility that goes with it ) won't come until the system breaks, and the few folks that are left are FORCED to do for themselves. Be careful what you dream of.

One of the local news channels has an article about the petition up. The comments are a mixed bag of yays and nays, with people either cheering it on, or offering to draw and quarter anyone who signs. Several were wailing about treason.

Yeah, to be expected. If for any reason a state actually begins to secede for real, count on a media blackout. For now, it's entertainment and an increase in ratings. The ignorant clones also have somebody to hate, giving them purpose in a dull and dreary world filled with Hollywood sycophants and holiday season bargain shopping to battle for their very limited attention.

"Death to the secession movement!", they exclaim with their pudgy, diabetic scabbed fist raised in the air --just before they take another gulp of their Starbucks frappaccino with lowfat dairy and artificially sweetened chemical induced lobotomy with a twist of GMO lemon.

    Frightened, clueless and hopeless.

You must have only read the first half........

In the second half, I said "won't happen" due to the number feeding at the federal tit.

Folks who clearly never read the Declaration of Independence......

Of course, the repetition of the "Pledge of Allegiance" for multiple generations has drummed into their heads "one nation, INDIVISIBLE...." for so long, they may have some small excuse for their ignorance.

The fact some twit would start a petition for a foreign nation holding the office of President, in violation of the Constitution, to sign an "executive order" to strip someone of citizenship, as if EO's were actually a law, shows the depth of ignorance in this country.

"What form shall our government take, Mr. Franklin ? " ( asked of Ben Franklin as he descended the steps of Constitution Hall coming away from the convention )

"A Republic, sir......if you can keep it !"

I can understand being pessimistic about it, but a "CAN"T" attitute accomplishes nothing. Doing nothing is a silent agreement that what they are doing to us is okay.
    .
BTW, for a Florida Residents, our petition has 24,000 plus signatures including mine. Please help push it over 25,000 !!!

You sure? This one has 19k plus: Peacefully grant the State of Florida to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government. | We the People: Your Voice in Our Government

I thought I saw some duplicates, but I didn't see more than one for Florida. Anyway, if this is the one I might sign it since I am still registered to vote there. But...this still isn't the way a state secedes (not to mention the grammatical errors on this petition, oy vey! =)

B - you don't have to worry about duplicate voting. Many areas had 150% voter turnout. With statistics like that, Florida should only need 16,667 actual voters to reach the necessary number.

Brain fart. Olde timers dsease. Plus CRS, can't remember s hit. For some reason I was thinking they needed 30,000 minimum. Heck, I was 19,915. Even my math was totally screwy. You are absolutely correct! Thank you. They need a minimum of 25,000 petition signers.
