Options for .22 Silencers

I have read about problems of sub-sonic .22 rounds not cycling a semiauto and other problems.

So, I'm moving toward the perspective that perhaps a decent silencer may be a better solution.

But, I do not know how to build one or where to buy one. What are my options and where do I pursue improving my education on the topic of silencers?

I have a couple Tac 65s TAC65 .22LR SUPPRESSOR Excellent Suppression, Easy To Clean by: Tactical Innovtions.
1 is attached to a Walther P-22 and the other is attached to a Volquartsen 22 rifle. I have successfully used both with sub-sonic rounds and can also use them on an Ar-15 with a .22 LR conversion.

    Loads of fun!

Just don't try to make one yourself without the federal paperwork or you could face some serious trouble. =)

Silencers are legal in 38 states, to find out more visit: Silencers Are Legal

+1 to what Brokor said. If you are going to build/obtain one do so legally!
I might even suggest an NFA Trust where the trust owns the NFA Item and not you by name.
Research is required on your part.

But they can be boring NOT behind bars [patr]

And to the OP...subsonics are part of the weapon/suppressor combination. Exceeding the speed of sound will result in a sonic crack...and with a .22 it can be louder than the round firing. Grab a box of subsonics and see how they work in your weapon. You may need to try different brands to find one that works the action acceptably. You may even find that without the "crack" the weapon is quiet enough and save some $$$ and time. Suppressor tax stamps were taking 3 -6 months for the initial one...not sure how bad they are now.

In addition, disposables are easily made from common materials, but they will catch fire.

.22lr pistols with short barrels can use standard velocity and even hyper velocity rounds and still come out subsonic. When you use subsonic rounds in a Walther P22, you are wasting them! Usually I use Remington Golden Bullets or Winchester Dynapoints and still get good, quiet performance. I'm not saying that you can't use them, it's just that you can use less expensive rounds that will do the same thing.

The suppressor itself will lend a little bit more performance to the pistol's (or AR subcal convertion) action, acting like a longer barrel. It does mean you have to clean it up a little more often than usual, as there is powder residue all over the place- barrel, action, suppressor, etc.

All joking aside, I may or may not have made silencers as a kid, back when the boot of the Gestapo wasn't as firmly stuffed in the face of every living being. A little pvc, steel wool and screen, rubber bands and lithium grease can work in a pinch...or even dad's spare conduit and a little know-how...but, like I said before --BAD JU-JU! No can do!!!

Just so you know, Dasani water bottles fit perfectly over the end of a standard M4 style AR-15 muzzle brake with no tools required to fit. It is airtight, secure and pops right on like it was made for it. A single piece of duct tape could keep it on for longer term.

in a pinch a solid veggie like a potato can serve as a silencer ... just jam it on the barrel end .... you'll get a number of shots out of it

As I have never done it, so I've wondered how well it worked.

Looks as if it works. ;)

Now, I am wondering if it would work with DA or SS revolvers? There is a .003" to .010" gap ( .003" is typical, optimum endshake is 0.001") between the cylinder and forcing cone.

They used to make a screw on adapter for 2 liter pop bottles, Allegedly it worked as a silencer for 5-6 rounds before the bottle needed to be changed.

Those adapters are still available, but you have to get in touch with a good suppressor manufacturer and have them make one for you. Thompson Machine down in Florida is a good place to have it made.

Of course, it will cost you an extra $200 for the tax stamp. The bottles you attach to the end are considered consumables, like silencer baffles.

I will preface this with the fact that I am an FFL and I so sell class 3 gear.

I have had the chance to handle many different 22 cans. Much of what I can tell you depends on what you plan to do with the can and what the host or hosts will be. I think everyone should have a 22 can and a .30 cal can. My personal favorite 22 can is the silencerco sparrow. It is quiet and a breeze to clean. That is my primary complaint with most 22 cans is cleaning them is VERY difficult. 22 ammo is very dirty and it also leaves quite a bit of lead in the can. The sparrow fixes all those issues.

I will say like many others have said there are many ways to quieter a gun. Some legal and some not. Be very careful what you do with making a gun quiet. There are many ways to violate the rules when it comes to the ATF. Don't get yourself in any trouble
