But, what Mag's would the. 308 use? Previously, I would never even consider a bolt gun in such a low-powered round. But having it use AR mags is appealing. On the other hand, I could just get an AR with a nice bull-barrel and achieve the same thing. I do agree with you though: I would much rather have a .308 bolt gun. I had the same thought process when I first saw the weapon. Nice to look at, interesting, but I could build an AR that could achieve the same accuracy. If they decide to make one in .308, they should a Magpul DPMS 308 magazine. That would be interesting. The problem then arises as the first time; you can buy an AR-10 variant for the same amount of money and get great accuracy from it to boot. Most noteably, get a match trigger for it and your accuracy increases 100%. At least it did for me.
I'll have to retract some of what I said the other night. I checked into the rifle, just to see what it cost wholesale. It actually would be cheaper than putting together an AR specifically built for precision. It's all in what you want, I suppose. I would still be more inclined to buy one in .308 over .223, though.
Given that it takes AR mags, but not a mean, scary assault gun, I might have to get one . . . just because . . . . that'll be about the only thing for sale in a month. I agree though, 7.62 would be preferred. Too bad they couldn't make a "platform-agnostic" mag well that takes inserts, which you would have to buy separately. You could get an insert for a M1A1, FN, HK91, AR-10. That would be wick'd cool.
That is a great idea. It is probably highly impractical (as in impractical to the bottom line) to do so.
It seems that Mossberg just started to chamber the MVP in .300 AAC BLK. This is the next best thing to 7.62 Nato up close. Sometimes you want to shoot .300 Blackout in a bolt gun; i.e. using cast 240gr bullets, 110gr .30 carbine bullets, or 180gr FMJ RN that won't cycle through an AR's action. Hunting with it- can't hunt in PA with a suppressor (not deemed "sporting" by the archaic game wardens), and the .300 would still wallop a coyote! Having a bolt gun and an AR in this caliber would open up the width of utility for this cartridge. There has been a few of these bolt actions lately that have detachable box magazines, something that previously was only achievable aftermarket. I think it may have started with the Ruger Gunsite Scout. I think they are really practical. I haven't been interested in a bolt action rifle in years, but these look like great rifles. I recently saw one that I believe was made by Savage in a similar set up. I would kind of like one in .308 with a medium weight 16" barrel, bedded appropriately, and glassed with some medium range optics. Threaded with a great flash suppressor or break would be cool too. Keep the weight down to shoot off hand, but still have enough there to make moderate range shots and an occasional long range shot.
