Anybody here fish with their bow? Anybody fish with a recurve? I'm just starting to get into archery again (not since I was 14) and I've been wondering about the equipment needed to do such. There seems to be plenty of specialized equipment; fishing broadheads, reels, etc. I just need a little help sorting it all out- what's actually needed verses what's just nice to have.
Not for years. Used to be pretty good. My main targets were gar over 3 feet in length and delicious young alligators 5 to 7 foot long. Ain't done it in 35 years or so, but haven't forgot how. I have a cheap fiberglass recurve that would be suitable, and since you brought this up will acquire at least 3 solid fiberglass bowfishing arrows. The rest I can construct easily enough. Carp is just another mans gefilte fish. Gar, well now that is another problem now that mercury poisoning is such a threat in most fresh water. In Saltwater there are a few fish I will not eat again but yet will kill. I assumed this was all geared for post shtf. So what I said above was not meant as a joke. I have in the past used trash fish as fertilizer, or shreaded and bottled, and cured in the sun to use as a trapping lure. It will also fire up a compost pile and even get it turned for you for free. You just have to rake and scoop up the scattered stuff and put it back in the pile. I do joke, but this wasn't one of those times.
I use an almost 40 year old Bear compund I found in the used rack at the local Scheels.....An AMS roller rest and AMS bowfishing retriever and arrow. No sights and I shoot with a glove. Love bowfishing, most fun I've had in years.... First, find a good bow. You need one you are comfortable with and one that wont wear you down from shooting all day. Next, a roller rest, or somekind of drop-away rest. Then you need a spool or someway to store the line. (I highly recoment the AMS set up) Next, Multiple fiberglass fish arrows. ( I've lost a few) Use good line on the reel, as big Carp can be really tough to pull in and like to dive under logs and stuff. Thats the basics as best I can recall....
My mother used to drop fish heads, fish guts, prawn (shrimp) shells and crab offal into the bottom of holes dug for planting out passion fruit vines and fruit trees. She said that sheep or calf's liver was good too. The nutrients from the rotting residues gave the plants a good head start.
