Gonna call her "Supper" and left overs for the domestic cat!

Too bad the fur market is so low and I still have a number of salted deer hides.

I have had more raccoon meals possible over the years than I can count, and unfortunately lack the knowledge of how to completely field dress these masked raiders so as to make them eatible. It is my understanding that a number (unknown #) of waxy kernals (some sort of musk gland or whatever) exist on these little beasts, and must be removed (all of them) or what you cook will be unfit for man or dog.
    .
I would appreciate any raccoon specific tutorial on field dressing this beast and locating, identifying and removing these glands. Links, videos, 1st person knowledge, ...... anything. Please help

Skin and remove all fat. Remove the small glands under each front leg in a place like our arm pit. Remove the two glands near the anus. Gut as normal for a mammal. Note I discovered the glands by accident but had always removed them with the surface fat before I knew what thay were. If you cut into the gland then wash your hands, knife and the racoon.

The gland is about the size of a large bean.

Boil for a couple of hours in salt water.

Bake @ 350, after adding brown gravy mix, salt, pepper and what ever veggies you have in a cooking bag. Add or drink a beer , your choice.

Thanks for the quick response. To be clear, I have 4 glands to find. The two under the front legs should be easy enough. The two near the anus are a bit vague. A picture would be grand, but I will ask a question or two if that is not possible. With the raccoon skinned and gutted and laying on the cutting board on its back. Question; do both genders of coon have these 4 glands I have to remove? Question; spinning the cutting board so I am looking at the anus end of the coon belly up, where do the glands lay in relation to the anus? either side? inline with the anus? how far? up some towards the belly, or down some towards the back? As you can see I have a few questions about this and I am a bit anal about it ..... lol. A picture or detailed description really would help. Please ......
    .
BTW HK, I have asked this question on more than a few times, no one ever answered at all. I thank you for your response. You got me half way there. Take it home .......

A bit of why "The glands" are there may help locate them.

Glands are for marking terriority in a natural way, in this a Racoon climbs all the time so the fronts are in a protected but a useful way to show the racoon's trail. As the Racoon climbs the glands will deposit by the rubbing against tree bark etc. So goes the rear section application since the glands are inside of the thigh muscles about equal distance(1inch or so) from the anus in close to the balls. Think "Racoon wrapping legs arond tree limb and contact releasing the scent.

Most times the rear glands will be removed with the hide and or fat.

I found this Guy (SEE NEXT POST) and except for doing too much of the work inside the home he is spot on.

As always in a true survival or hunger world you can use most of the internal organs as good food. Heart, lungs etc. I never eat the liver on scanvegers. I pull the fat just to have a standard food as fat greatly flavors the meat. Fat is Good if you need a lube or extra energy.

FWIW, right now we have an excellent supply of field rats, which I share with the cat but I would eat them in a minute but for the returns the cat provides in our world. Of course we often find gifts or gut piles from the cat at our front door. Always take care of your animals first, they may be your first source of food.

Figure the field rats are fur bearing protein bits that live on grains and insects and can be a bit harder dispatch as the set docile in the trap.

I have two live traps set at all times, one large for varmints and one small for Rats. Trick one is to wire your bait to the trap bottom. Other wise the small game will walk across the trip pan, eat and walk back out.

    I'll do Pics later.

Also it seems from my research just now that about 90% of the people on the net are full of BS about Racoon Prep.

WHO'D a THUNK you's get incorrect intel on the WWW?

Excellent post and reply. Thank you very much HK. My next young bandit will be rendered food. I could trap all I want. They really do prove the old adage that "curiousity killed the cat". I have a fish juice/sardine baited hole set they seem impossible to ignore.

No problem and one of my pets was a female Racoon as I grew up about 1200 miles from you. She once ended up in a neighbors chimney, I'm glad they had their damper shut.

Too each his or her own. I appreciate the lack of competition for this resource. Seems as if I have a near endless supply. I let a couple of guys come in and trap 45 or so in less than 2 weeks. They knew they were here from me allowing them to bow hunt. They supposedly had some local coon dog hunting friends who were offering $20 each for live coons to train the dogs. As it turned out they only wanted a few. Their original offer was $20 for as many as you can bring us. Some bubbas can't be trusted to their words. Those 45 hardly put a dent in things around my 20 acres. I can only assume the parboiling serves to render and remove fat as much as anything. I have several ideas on how to cook them. My only problem was the glands. You can bet my pantry will have some fresh canned coon before to long.

Right on for the food source. The cooking time for the boiling is mainly for Old Males. At a kill weight of 30 lbs that is an awsome amount of food for near zero effort.

Had a real Racoon problem some years back and trapped some 35 Racoons in a month. One time I had three in the trap. After all the neighbors all think the Racoon is a DISNEY animal. They don't have a clue!!!!!

You can also hang your bait from the roof of the cage with a wire shower curtain ring. that works real well. I have three traps myself. I also added a 1/8" steel cable about 20' long to each cage. with a loop on the end, for a padlock, they no longer walk away on their own.
