I just spent 2+ hours watching the first Senate Hearings on Gun Control, and I see that the Dems really had few questions for any of the witnesses, except their Stooge Law Enforcement Clown, from a BIG City, Maryland Department, and a few for Gabby's Husband. There was a discussion that took place about the 2nd Amendment and protection for a Tyrannical Government. They asked the LEO, why ANYONE would want to Protect themselves from the government, and His Officers? His answer was totally Bizarre, in the extreme. NOBODY brought the Battle of Athens, TN, and asked this Jerk, what THAT means, in todays situation, in His Opinion. Now that is a Question, I would have asked, and DEMANDED an ANSWER to, while he was UNDER Oath......

BT, the whole thing is window dressing. The last little bit was a total waste and unless it was a repeat of earlier, you didn't miss anything. Lahey's closing remarks were typical, meaningless and pointless. Captain Kelly's remarks were equally banal (what I heard). I was unimpressed with any of it (missed LaPierre but I'm sure I would have been non-plussed).

Again, this was window dressing. The decisions have already been made on what will or won't happen, just like the last minute fiscal cliff "deal", the temporary spending cap extension and any other eleventh hour deals that are in the works.

I'm not saying it will pass or not, I'm just saying that the decision this go around has already been made by those who actually make the decisions...your mileage is NOT going to vary on this one.

and in the distance, faintly, you can hear the beat of the war drums. As of yet no shots have been heard, but can not they most surely soon be sounded?

I didn't watch much of it.. it's all rigged. If you took a panoramic picture of the room, the ratio of commies to American-lite's would be 10:1.

The evening news is making a big deal of Giffords testimony, and why is beyond me. Getting shot does not make you an expert on gun control policy, any more than getting run over by a truck makes you an expert in traffic safety.

But I guess when you don't have facts to back up your argument, you bring out little kids and crime victims to sell your point of view.

Here's a clip of LaPierre, it's not comprehensive by any means but it looks like the NRA is going to fight universal background checks.

    To paraphrase:

LaPierre - "you idiots need to get a grip on reality"

Durbin - "but if we make it illegal, criminals won't do it"

OK, maybe not a great paraphrasing job... anyway, here's the clip - but I must warn you, the fact that Durbin's comments (see paraphrasing above) gets an applause is sickening...

Just like you don't take driving lessons from someone who's had 50 accidents and hold them up as an expert in the field...after all, look at all the experience they've had!

I feel for her, I really do, don't ger me wrong but like you said, being a victim of a crime doesn't make you any kind of expert in the field. A poster child for the other side, yes, but that's all they want her to be and in this case, a "pathetic" poster child. Her recovery thus far has been nothing short of miraculous but not quite miraculous enough. The best thing, the TRULY best thing that could have happened would have been for Gabrielle to actually recover 100%, get a CCW, carry to the prison where Jared was incarcerated, to meet with her assailant, have her weapon taken from her (because it wouldn't be allowed, for obvious reasons), sit across from him and then during the meeting when everything was going so well and she was forgiving him to lunge across the table and crush his trachea with a finger sword to the throat. Then turn around, put her hands out and wait for the cuffs.

No gun involved either, just a woman who snapped when she thought she had forgiven her attacker after recovering fully from the gunshot wound. Turns out she just couldn't and would NEVER be a victim again...EVER!

Sorry, rant off. Been doing that a lot the last couple of days.

There's a reason Durbin's first name is what it is and it doesn't have anything to do with genetics...

I got into a debate a few weeks ago with a lib friend that was making the common argument that we should ban mags, ARs, the usual. I looked at him and just asked, "if banning all that stuff will cause criminals to stop killing people, why don't we just make it illegal to kill people?" Deer in the headlights as he pondered that. I think it started to register because a fellow usually at no loss for words didn't have a come back. But I somehow doubt this would work for the media or pols.

I do have to say something about Giffords though.
She does have a very valid issue that she brings to the forefront.
It only takes half a brain to serve in the legislative branch.

I know this was just a joke, and not intended to be disrespectful.

I do not agree with her politics, or using her injury to push her agenda, but she was injured while in service to our country, so I still believe she deserves some respect.

My problem is the liberals on capital hill, exploiting her to push their own agenda.

If they can't make their case without pulling out kids and disabled people, then maybe there is a problem with their case?

I'm just trying to resolve this.

    1. I don't agree with her politics
    - presumably because you think they are antithetical to how you serve your country
    2. She was injured while in service to our country
-is that what you call service?

I have no inclination to support maiming or killing an individual because of their politics, but sometimes.. sometimes karma comes around and get's ya.

  19. bfayer

I can't argue the karma comment.

I have served with a lot of people that hold very liberal view points, and some that have tried to use their position to push their views on others in their chain of command. But they still served their country and pulled their weight, and deserve respect for it.

I may not agree with a significant number of public servants, but they step up to serve our country in the way they think is right, and for that I believe they deserve respect.

Keep in mind I did not say their opinions or ideas deserve respect, just the individual. If an individual I respect says or does something stupid or wrong, I'm going to make sure they know it, but I can attack the action or idea without attacking the person.

Now there are some people that have served our country honorably that have done things so egregious that they give up the respect card, and they are fair game, but I do not put Representative Giffords or her husband in that pool.

Getting elected to office, working to change the laws from within the system, that's the very definition of service. Liberal/Conservative, Democrat/Republican, Right/Left it doesn't matter. "They" don't agree with "us" any more than "we" agree with "them" but they are serving their country in the best way they know how. Looking at it from their perspective, if you can be unbiased for 5 minutes and be honest with yourself you'll be able to see that.

Do I agree with her politics? Heavens no. Will I work to defeat what she was standing for? Oh yeah. Do I wish I had the balls to run for office? Yes, but I'll admit that I don't. There, I said it. I lack the testicular fortitude to run for public office and take the fight to them on their turf. The most I've been able to do is write a couple of books that touch on it more than a little tangentially. Maybe in the future I will be able to do more when the kids are less dependent on me and the wife. We'll see.

Do I think she deserved to be "taken out" for what she was doing? Again, no. I don't even think that Senator Feinstein needs to be gunned down, just removed from office as a traitor to the country and constitution. She has violated her oath of office, plain and simple but she shouldn't be shot in the street like a dog! If, and I say IF she were to be tried and found guilty of treason and violation of her oath of office then there are penalties but that is a matter of justice for the Courts, not vigilantes.
