OpSec says that is a "Good Idea".... I am a little bit more forward than a total BAN.... I watch, but Rarely Post on Facebook, and NO Twitter at all... Skype is used for video Calls with KNOWN folks ONLY.... The rest is eMail, where I run my OWN Servers, and No One has access to them, without a Warrant, that is verified FIRST......

Ahh, there is a place for social media.
    Twitter and Facebook.
It depends on how you use it.
    Posting? Watch what you say.
but watching and listening to 'tweets'
I'm going to know about a breaking story local, AO, regional and in areas of interest way before it hits the news, and the MSM doesn't control it.

Iran gets attacked? Earthquake in NZ? Subway incident in the Ukraine? Lots of patients going to the hospital in Sydney? British terrorist attack? Storm effecting travel in Halifax? Run on the banks in Finland? Protests in Poland? No more cheese in Wisconsin? I'll know.

I've spent years building my information network beyond the US. Social media is just one of the tools i use for information gathering. Wait a minute, so does our government. Anyway, I trust my sources way more than any gov. sources that may provide biased info.

    ;)

Plus, you can have an online presence that is greatly disparate from your real life, by posting useless stuff like funny comic strips, quips of the day, great recipes, etc. All while maintaining your OpSec.

The early 60's? Dude, you may want to get on social media. Intel seems not to make it there to the great white north. [lolol]

Isn't a discussion forum a form (or precursor) of social media? I don't facebook although my wife does. She seems to have just about the same experience that we have here in this forum.

The difference is on Facebook your stuff is available to a much wider audience, on here there is a dedicated set of Users...

I guess I think of the term 'social media' as something that's been engineered- the concept is not new as interactive internet has been around since the early days of Usenet and BBS boards. We could comment on pages and otherwise interact with a web site owner or group of users for as long as I've been on the net.

I see all of the internet as we know it as a social network. 'media' is the contrived term.

Maybe to some, my wife's account is locked down to only those she knows, as is my LinkedIn account

Social media, like any human technology, such as firearms for instance can be used for good or ill; and can be beneficial or baneful, depending upon how it is used. Treat either with cavalier disrespect, and fail to use either technology safely and the odds increase that you may at some time experience a world of hurt. There's no more reason to fear social media than there is to fear firearms...just get to know the limitations and hazards of the technology, and take appropriate safety precautions to minimise the hazards and risks.
    Edit:
Back in the day....Ham radio and landline party lines were the electronic social media of choice (simply because there were no others), and people's social reputations lived or died by the gossip and eves dropping picked up at the barber shop, the post office, the general store, the beauty salon, and the telephone exchange (when calls were made were connected via a telephone operator). The only difference is that the potential audience for a social or OPSEC gaffe is now the world, rather than just your local neighbourhood or community.
