Kinda small but if i lived near water and needed a plan "C" this might work, I could see storing something like this under the couch or bed.

Meh. Just a prototype, and while interesting not very useful.

I had a Folboat back in the 70's. Pain in the butt to set up & take down (back then) but a whole lot more useful.

What's not to like with a flat pack tub? Huck and Tom would have been happy with it. It would probably make for a useful tender in protected waters.

There's no sense of scale in the pix, but I'd wager it's longer than a pack frame unless rolled up.

I was thinking it might be good for apartment dwellers or city folk who don't have a lot of room AND who live near a major river. Worst case, you could grab your BOB and float out of the city.

The boat is an unobtrusive matt black colour, which would be handy for a night exfil.....but it would be handy to practice your origami boat making in the dark and under some simulated stress. Under pressure, stress and with a largish amount of adrenalin and hydrocortisone pumping about, even the simplest manual tasks can become extraordinarily difficult. You don't want to discover that when your life depends upon it.

If one is going to keep such a boat....keeping beau coup spare pins, rowlocks, together with a bailer and a basic repair kit, would make sense....drop one connecting pin or rowlock in the dark...or the water...could be disasterous

This thread has inspired me to find: The PortaBote . Seems to me to be an actual, useful boat (up to 14'long) and has the ability to use either an electric or gas powered outboard and also offers a lanteen rigged sail kit.

No I'm not connected to them, just thought it was a neat boat.
No pricing info on their website, hafta send away for it.

The PortaBote seems to be a more robust design with a greater degree of flexibility with regards to motive power and payload. I suspect that the Portabote would survive impacts with debris and underwater obstructions better than the origami boat which may be a plus if trying to survive a passage in floodwater. Add a .50 cal on a pintle mount at the Bow...and a life of buccaneering on the Great Lakes or the Mississipi can be yours!!!

Recent prototype: The most recent prototype folds into a compact parcel, 150cm x 80cm. The 'folding boat' can now fit into the back of a car. The assembly of the boat has been completely redesigned and is now more intuitive and easy. @ghrit does that help?

Have been a passenger in Portabote before - fished and tooled about on Eagle Lake - cant say enough about how safe I felt and its construction and even its asthetical design.

I like the idea of the portaboat's lanteen sail option. If the outboard fails or you run out of juice, provided that you have a gentle zephyr to push you along, it would save a lot of sweat and blisters trying to row the thing to your BOL. Besides, sailing is a lot of fun, and a great recreational activity to share with the kids and grandkids.

Recently purchased a West Wight Potter 15 ( used and a fantastic deal ) to do just that. Currently setting it up for my wife and I to sail and improving the 12V set up on it. Finishing my coast Guard Advanced Coastal Navigation Course here in about 6 weeks ( always always trying to learn new skills - my Brother calls it the Magellan class ). Guy I bought the boat from has proved to be a great guy who has taught me about sailing and actually took the little boat out to the Farallon Islands ( he's a heck of a sailor ) several times. I bought it cause the things have a great reputation as being nigh impossible to sink and being easy to sail. He has a great singlehanded rig set up. I joined Coast Guard Auxiliary for the free training. Coast Guard Quality training without the nasty 4 yr commitment LOL

Getting Boat Crew Qualified currently and I plan to have my AUXOP certification by end of this Summer barring any setbacks.
