Saved under Featured, World In a classic example of the many things that can go wrong when a nation finds itself in dozens of entangling alliances around the globe, the United States government has now found itself funding the very organization it went to war with over a decade ago, following the horrific 9/11 attacks – al-Qaeda. In December of 2012, the Obama Administration’s State Department labeled Syria’s al-Nusra, a terrorist organization. In a press statement, department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland stated, “Since November 2011, al-Nusrah Front has claimed nearly 600 attacks – ranging from more than 40 suicide attacks to small arms and improvised explosive device operations – in major city centers… During these attacks numerous innocent Syrians have been killed.” The memo went on to reveal “al-Aqaeda emir Abu Du’a is in control of both al-Aqaeda and al-Nusrah.” That same memo revealed that the United States had provided (by December) over $50 million in “non-lethal” military aid to Syrian rebels. Since then, however, al-Nusra has established itself as the leading force in opposing Syria’s sitting government and has won the praise and admiration of Syrian rebels throughout the region. Al-Nusra recently gained the respect of America’s ally, the Free Syrian Army in the Battle of Aleppo. One rebel said that members of the group “rush to the rescue of rebel lines that come under pressure and hold them… They know what they are doing and are very disciplined. They are like the special forces of Aleppo.” Following these revelations, rather than reassess its assistance to the Free Syrian Army, the Obama Administration has in fact doubled down in its support for an organization which praises Al-Qaeda. The UK’s Telegraph, published an article last month which claims, that the United States and its allies in Europe have given “3,000 tons of weapons… sent in 75 planeloads… to the rebels, largely via Jordan since November.” The Obama Administration insists that these weapons are funneled into the hands of “moderate, secular fighters,” but one Middle East expert had this to say, “Anyone who believes that these weapons are winding up in the hands of al-Nusra is living in a fantasy world. The two groups are bound together and just as the US and Great Britain shared resources in World War II so is the Free Syrian Army and al-Qaeda… The problem is that we, in the West, are always looking to divide the world into ‘good guys’ and ‘bad guys’. Sometimes we need to realize that in this particular situation – as was in the case when the USSR invaded Afghanistan years earlier – both sides are bad guys.” The concerns come just hours after a leaked video of Syrian rebels using the same high-powered sniper rifle favored by U.S. Navy SEALs appeared on YouTube. In the background of the video, shouts of “Alahu Akbar” can be heard. Continuing in her assessment, Alena stated, “The Obama Administration has fallen into the same trap it fell into in Egypt only a few years ago. They have placed all their support behind the opposition to a very bad man, only to realize that the opposition is very bad too – in this case, Al-Qaeda.
Well, we equipped and trained the Taliban through al-queda in Afghanistan in the 80s and that turned out so well for us today. What could possibly go wrong with the same strategy in Syria?
