I picked up a Hallicrafters S-53A many years ago as a rebuild project. All the tubes and paper caps were replaced and the incandescent dial lights, restrung the dial along with replacing a few other components. Hooked up to one of my dipoles and it pulls in SW, US and Canadian AM stations with ease. A non transistor radio and companion for my Hallicrafters HT-40 AM/CW transmitter.
Cool, I have an S-40, S-40 A and a B model as well. The S-38s are a ton of fun as well I grabbed these images off the net, the schematics for these may be found on line as well. These old tabletop radios are fun, if you have the room to display and play one. After all, real radios glow in the dark.... Portable radios are a ton of fun as well. I've found all of these at flea markets or ham radio 'hamfests'. You should see the radio play before you plunk down your dough. Thanks!
60 year old radios that you can still find parts and make them work not just throw them away. Does anyone remember their father taking a box of tubes from the family TV down to the drug store tube tester, test them buy a tube or 2 and fix the family TV? I picked up extra sets of NOS US made tubes for all of my Hallicrafters some had Hallicrafter logos and tested out fine on a friends surplus GI tube tester.
