Thanks Chel, One should practice going barefooted as much as possible. If one has to then your feet would already be tough enough to handle the challenge. There is a gent nearby that has been going barefoot year round for @20 yrs. I like my shoes but can go w/o if necessary.

I go barefoot as much as possible, I just like it more than wearing shoes, especially once your feet toughen up.

Here's a video on how one is applied:

I say thanks, but no thanks. Same for barefoot.

    You might be surprised........
These would conduct no better than bare feet, and chainmail will protect against things that cut, not nails, nor will chainmail "unravel" as one poster claimed. I weave chainmail. It's knitting for real men.

I have featured this footwear in a separate thread...I think on the subject of body armour. The chainmail booties are cool...I was just having a stir about electrical conductivity. Thermal conductivity may be an issue in winter, but there would be insulative workarounds to minimise that problem.

you are right about the protection against cuts and abrasive surfaces, but it would offer little protection against crushing...stout steel capped safety boots would probably offer better protection. For fast travel over non urban terrain they would be as effective as moccasins, but offering somewhat better protection. The down side is that they would leave a very distinctive spoor that would make tracking easier.

It was offered, for those who tout barefoot. I prefer my boots. And I never wear steel toes by choice.

Steel toes freeze my feet in the winter so I wont wear them. Once I knew of a guy that had his foot run over by a garbage truck while wearing steel toed boots. His toes became trapped and at the hospital, they had to cut the crushed boots off of him with bolt cutters. After that our company went to plastic "reinforced" toes. They wont chill your feet as bad in cold weather and they still protect your feet relatively well. I still like the steel sole for puncture resistance but they get chilly in a hurry as well.

Steel caps probably won't save toes run over by truck....but they do a good job on kneecaps, shins and testicles and they will offer protection to your foot from being stomped on in a struggle, which is a useful bonus.

The plastic reinforced caps sound like a good all year round option. Reinforced toe cap boots/shoes make for sensible, if perhaps not particularly stylish urban day to day footware.

Thanks for sharing and welcome to the the Monkey tree. Yours is a good early contribution.

My friend Shay Kelley, who has been roaming the country for the past few years doing her "Project 50/50" work (helping out the needy & homeless, via private contributions), also started a project she called "Happy Feet". HF does nothing more than collect socks, and distribute them to homeless folks, who spend most of their day on their feet, and tend to wear through socks much faster than many of us do!

Like we all learned, watching Forrest Gump:

[raspberry] Don't leave out the girls, Kell, it's not polite, and might lead to chainmail jockstraps, which would pinch and pull delicate tissues. :p

Don't have much pity for "homeless" anymore. They are on food stamps, and many on handicap status for alcoholism. Offer one a job and see if they show up---very few will and if so they gripe/grumble/complain about conditions and pay.

Depends on where you are, 06. Here in LA, a significant number of homeless belong in a rubber room, but they've been kicked out. The rest, yes, are alcoholics and druggies, and I have very little or no sympathy for them. My boss offers promising ones jobs from time to time, and sometimes one even shows up.

The ones I have no sympathy for are the ones that will be standing (or sitting) outside Burger King, and ask for a dollar, "for food". If you offer them a buck, they're happy. If you offer to bring them back out something to eat, they look at you like you're a smartass, or something!

I've seen those. I always offer a dollar burger or something, and if they accept, then I get them a whole meal. The ones that look at me get told to get a life.
