12 dead in Navy Yard shooting; 1 suspect dead, 2 sought - Yahoo News

WASHINGTON — At least 12 people died Monday during a shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, officials said. One gunman died in the shooting, and police are seeking two other possible shooters.

The Navy Yard was placed on lockdown after shots were fired inside a building on the base, the U.S. Navy said. At least 10 other people were injured in the shooting, including eight civilians, one Washington Metro police officer and one base officer, D.C. Metro Police said.

Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said the gunman, whose name has yet to be released, was shot during an exchange with the Metro Police officer.

"As far as we know, it's an isolated incident," Gray said.

"We have no known motive at this stage," the mayor added. "We also don't know for certain if there were other shooters."

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said authorities are seeking two possible suspects who may still be at large: a white male, 40 to 50 years old, wearing a khaki military-style uniform and a beret, carrying a handgun or pistol; and a black male, also 40 to 50 years old, 5'10", 180 pounds, medium complexion with gray sideburns and wearing an olive military-style uniform, carrying "a long gun."

"We have reason to believe these people were involved and we need to talk to them," Lanier said.

The FBI, she said, is now taking the lead in the investigation.

Before a scheduled economic speech at the White House, President Barack Obama deplored "yet another mass shooting" — this one targeting military and civilian personnel.

“These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us," Obama said. "They’re patriots, and they know the dangers of serving abroad. But today they faced the unimaginable: violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home."

"We will do everything in our power to make sure that whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible," the president added. "I want the investigation to be seamless."

Janis Orlowski, chief medical officer at Washington Hospital Center, said one Metropolitan Police officer and two civilians are being treated there. All three are in critical condition, Orlowski said, but are alert, speaking and have a good chance of survival.

One was shot in the legs, another in the shoulder and another in the head and hand.

Orlowski said Washington Hospital Center is prepared to handle eight to 10 more victims, but did not know how many victims would be transported to the hospital. She said she had been told to expect more.

The Navy said shots were fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building on the base at 8:20 a.m., and a "shelter in place" order was issued for Navy Yard personnel.

Rick Mason, a program management specialist, told Yahoo News he was on the fourth floor when he saw someone with a shotgun aiming down into the atrium. The gunman, Mason said, was targeting people who walked into the cafeteria.

Other employees described a chaotic scene.

"We heard two shots and started wondering if that was the sound of someone dropping something or if they were really shots," Omar Grant, a civilian employee at the Navy Yard who was on the first floor of the atrium, said. "We heard three more shots, and that's when people started running out of the building and getting the hell out of there."

Approximately 3,000 people work in the building, the Navy said, though it's unclear how many people were inside at the time of the shooting.

A White House official said the president had been briefed several times throughout the morning about the unfolding situation at the Navy Yard by assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism Lisa Monaco and deputy chief of staff Alyssa Mastromanaco.

A heavy SWAT and police presence could be seen around the Navy Yard, and helicopters were circling overhead.
Employees could be seen huddled outside the base crying and holding each other. At least one of the victims was airlifted from the scene.

A ground stop was ordered at Reagan National Airport, and schools in the area were placed on temporary lockdown.

According to the Navy's website, Naval Sea Systems "engineers, builds, buys and maintains the Navy's ships and submarines and their combat systems." Approximately 60,000 people work there.

    Ok, as of 2:23 EST:
    12 dead
Anywhere between 1 and 3 shooters
1 shooter dead at the scene

FBI has taken over the investigation
ATF (the VERY same group that was involved in Boston) is now on site

Nice tin foil, DL. I was starting to go in the false flag direction in the shoutbox earlier that the administration was behind this. But somehow tying it into getting the sheeple to scream for bombing Syria didn't occur to me...

Ok, I'll just say it. Yes, I believe this was coordinated, agenda driven and designed to focus us back on the evil guns.

Yes, I believe that people in charge knew.

I won't say for sure that I think the "Administration" was involved but I won't rule it out.

Suspicious doesn't even begin to describe this situation.

of course Barry used it for his adgenda of taking away firearms rights by starting with "another mass shooting" in his statement.

Ok, I can understand ATF being there...technically. It is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and FIREARMS and Explosives. Why bring in the exact same team/group from Boston? That just doesn't make any sense unless it's for what we consider the "obvious" reasons.

The idiot pundits actually think they will be able to track the firearms involved. Really?!?!?! This person (or these people) were able to get into this fairly secure facility, which points to the fact that they aren't stupid. How dumb would they have to be to have bought their own guns?

Ok, Oliver North was just on Fox and I'm wondering if he just had a mental lapse. He said "before the fire started".

Anyone else watching Fox News and or catch that?

And it plays better for Barry the longer it goes on. Which is why they haven't "found" the other shooters yet. Besides, they need to sneak a dead body in the building to support the claim they "got the shooter" while getting their man out safely.

Did anyone else notice that BO was to give a speech on the economy before this happened?

Yes, it was postponed until just recently where he took credit for everything good that's happened (including things that haven't actually happened) but didn't take any responsibility for anything negative.

interesting. reported just mentioned people evacuated from the Navy Yard were taken to the Nationals ballpark for debreifing and were REQUIRED to turn in their cell phones upon entry. Perhaps so the FBI can wipe any videos that show evidence of government involvement can get uploaded?

Fox news now says 12 dead. Trusting nobammy and his clique of chicago cronies in crime does not enter my mind. IMO he would/will/does stoop to any lows to complete his agenda. So sorry for those whose lives have been altered by this tragedy--what a shame.

On a serious note, they came in tactically, covered different areas of the building and so far have been able to evade...except the one shooter. Smells like training of some type, my gut says this was a cell of some sort that had infiltrated the facility as an employee. Which would give them that access to get in with minimal disruptions.

I don't think these are .gov actions....but it serves the agenda well and continues to distract the sheep with this new event.

So they still haven't identified the dead shooter. He had stolen ID on him. And the DC schools are still on lockdown.
