A good friend of mine recently told me that he's thinking about the Mossberg 702 Plinkster, on sale at Cabela's right now for $100 each. He asked me what I thought about it, but as I have no experience with the 702, I can't really give him an opinion. Does anyone here have any experience with the 702? We both found mixed reviews online, but as I explained to him, I'm much more inclined to take the advice found on my favorite online forum, (that's the monkey tree, just in case you were wondering ) than from anywhere else on the internet. I searched the forums but couldn't find anything on it, so here I am asking what you monkeys think - any thoughts on the 702?
Looks like their version of the 10-22 Ruger... You can buy it with a 21" Barrel and comes with a 10 round Magazine.... List price is $235US for that model... Never seen one but for $100US Take Home Price, even if it turned out to be a Dog, you're not out much for a NEW Weapon....
That's kinda what I was thinking - at that price, you could buy 2 for the price of 1 Ruger 10/22, and have 2 of the same gun. If one breaks, you have a backup - if the 2nd one breaks, combine the 2 busted ones and make a serviceable weapon. Thinking along the lines of "2 is 1, 1 is none..." On the flip side though, I'd hate to suggest that he buy 2 pieces of crap, if that's what they would prove to be, when he'd be better off with one quality piece.
The first ones out didn't get very good reviews. They tended to jam. The new ones I guess have less problems. OK deal for an inexpensive plinker and loaner for someone.
Dicks had them as a black Friday special years ago at $79.95. Went late and they gave me a raincheck which was odd but bought it in February came with a cheap scope. No pink version but what the heck. Wally world had OEM Mossberg mags a few months ago. The "wood" stock is plastic wood grain, opted for the black stock. Mossberg & Sons | 702 Plinksterâ„¢
That's good to know, thanks for the head's up. As far as accuracy, do you find it to be sufficient (for what it is - a plinker / squirrel getter) or does it leave anything to be desired?
Before it was the Mossberg Plinkster, it was 7202 something or another that was made in Brazil. Not sure, been a while. Bought one for my youngest when he was 9 or 10, that was 11 or 12 years ago. Still runs, but is finicky on the mags. REAL FINICKY. Only likes the factory mags. After markets are known to turn the rifle into a jam-a-matic. Picky about ammo also. Blazer, not an issue but anything else you ARE going to have problems. Again this is an older model that has been through the mill and went swimming in the pond more than once. As for accurate, she is dead on to about 75 yards. After that its hit or miss...(LOL) As always...YMMV Gafarmboy
