What would you barter with?

I could use some 30-06, as long as it is legal to sell or trade for. i have access to a 30-06 of my Dad's. But as a trade item post SHTF, ammo can be used against you.

know the person you are arming.

 

If you have it then save it for trade.. 06 is a common caliber in many areas..

 

If I was confronted by hot chicks, I'd atleast try and barter with my warm and tender love.

 

I would never trade ammo to anyone I did not trust with my life.

Post SHTF, that is precisely what you are doing.

 

I guess I don't understand what you mean?

My point is I would not barter ammo with anyone that I did not know extremely well and then only if could trust them to back me up in cold dark places, or take care of my family while I'm away from home.

Alcohol, food, and services I would trade and barter to strangers, guns and ammo I would not.

I see no advantage in ensuring people I don't know or trust are well armed.

And before someone jumps in with "what if your family is starving" think about this, what are the people I am trading with going to do with the ammo? And where did they get the food they are willing to trade for ammo?

The two most likely answers are:

1. They hunted or scavenged for it. In either case I can do that myself.

2. They stole it. In which case the last thing I want them to have is more ammo that will allow them to keep taking from others, which would probably include myself and my friends.

Ammo and guns are like teenage daughters. If you wouldn't let someone head out the door with your daughter, they shouldn't be heading out the door with your ammo or guns.

Looks like we are on the same page on this issue.

Now if someone wanted to give me ammo in trade, I'm fine with that. Even if I didn't currently have a gun in that caliber. You never know what you could end up with in the future.

As for other barter items. Think renewable. You always want to be in a position of being an asset to the local community.

If all your barter supplies run out, you lose your value pretty quickly.

 

Gotta remember, some hot chicks do not like it "tender"...
And "Honey" pots have been trapping the un aware as long as man has been wandering this earth..

 

I'm going to agree with everyone else on this issue - in a post-SHTF environment, don't do it.

But, since the world as we know it hasn't ended yet, there's no reason not to go ahead and trade it right now, for something you can use later. (As long as you're not breaking any laws, of course.)

 

Funny thing about prepping, You never can know what someone else will value... These discussions present ideas that someone else has yet to think of..

Cheap little flashlights would be something I'd have no trouble trading and plenty of people would probably find valuable.

 

Poor Man's Barter Items

 

I have marketable skills.
I have been accumulating welding rod and materials for fabrication for almost all my life.

 

'Barter" assumes (or subtends) a situation stable enough you don't have to worry about folks coming for your stuff. Very unlikely in a real-deal wide area disaster.

My worry would not be what to have for barter, but just keeping what little I do have.... Does make for an interesting thought exercise.

In that vein

Aspirin - 325 mg tab
Ibuprofen 50 mg tab
"Tylenol" - 200 mg tab
these in the foil packets for moisture protection.

Oddly, Desitin cream in the smaller squeeze tubes.

Hydration salts, tabs in foil packet

white petroleum jelly in the small tubs

several pair of 'adjustable glasses'
(Adjustable Lens Eyeglasses)

at under 20 USD a pair, these could be a real lifesaver for folks with deep vision problems....Not so much for barter as for your affiliate group....

 

So far as bullet go especially those one has no weapon for, I have a kinetic bullet puller that I can remove the bullet and salvage the powder and load other useful ammo.

 

I will offer vegetables. I guess maybe people will be hungry enough to eat them! I wonder about the ability of anyone to offer anything worth trading for. Versus the possible problems of dealing with many who didn't prepare in any way. Firewood is about the only good thing I might want for my veggies.

 

When there was no internet, one had to buy information or earn it working for someone.
