To be the devils advocate, if the libs get the House of Reps back next year and ratify the UN treaty on weapons control..... is there any language in that document that prevents importing of components for ammunition?

Dunno, but there's language in The Constitution that all but requires us to ACTIVELY defend not just the 2nd, but all of the amendments in the Bill of Rights.

Most if not ALL Precious Metals are smelted offshore these days, due to the EPA Clean Air Act Regulations. It is cheaper to ship the Ore, and return ship the Metals, than deal with the .GOV. There is no worry about the USA running out of Lead, or other Metals, as long as we can still Import from the Off shore smelters, as we have been doing for the last two decades, at least. ......

Sorry for my doubt in any one standing up... Have been watching and speaking out since the 70's.. The rise of the Tea party was hope.. Let us see what comes of it, but as evidenced by the attacks on them, they may be a real threat to the progressives..

The death of the American ammunition industry may be premature.
Primary smelters turn ore into lead. Secondary smelters recycle existing lead.

Quite a few people have been declaring that the EPA’s bullying of the nation’s only primary lead smelter into closing means the death of the U.S ammunition industry, but as John Richardson notes at No Lawyers – Only Guns and Money, at least one of the nation’s primary bullet manufacturers is saying that they aren’t that worried about it.

    Sort of. Maybe.

It will be interesting to see how other manufacturers besides Sierra weigh in.

It is also worth noting that the company that owns the closing smelter, Doe Run, may re-open a more environmentally-friendly primary smelter literally across the street from the existing operation.

Let’s hold off on the freaking out until we see how much of an actual impact this may have.

Freaking out gets gets you killed.. Calm analysis of information prepares you to endure and overcome ...
When an industry loses a source of raw materials it will quickly look for and procure a fresh source.. It's companies life depends on that..

This story is in the news again, sounding more dire. End of the line for the lead bullet? Regulations, bans force switch to 'green' ammo | Fox News

One expert they quoted said, in effect, that even the .gov was considering stopping making the penny from copper because copper is so expensive. Makes me question the expert after a comment like that.

I have not seen a significant increase in lead prices from rotometals.com or any cast bullet companies, so it doesn't seem like they're too worried.

Good article with stats about lead production, importation and consumption Smelter closing means adjustments for lead customers : News

    Best quote from that article...

"When the Herculaneum smelter ceases operation, those shipments will more than triple to 260,000 tons, representing all of the lead mined in Missouri.

“That’s all going to go to the global market, primarily China,” Hughes said. “And the one thing we know about China is that the raw materials go in and the metal doesn’t come back out.”

Ok. The .gov can and has in the past , exclude itself from regulatory measures if those measures have a negative impact on their operations.

This is just Obummer bowing to the Chinese and getting them more raw materials at a discount. I am sure he will be compensated well for it.

The story is True, but the implied implication is Total BS.... Most of the lead used in the USA is recycled from Batteries and other sources. Most of the virgin Lead is, and has been, imported from off shore Smelters, for the last two DECADES. Once those Facts, are understood, the loss of the last Virgin Lead Smelter in the USA makes little difference to the Metals Market.
