I don't know how accurate the above map is for other States, but it seems to be a bit misleading for North Carolina. The map seems to indicate that a pocket knife, with a blade of greater than 3 inches in length, would be illegal; if I'm reading it right.

In fact, no blade length exists, that I'm aware of, for pocket knives in North Carolina. "A small knife, designed to be carried in a pocket or purse, that has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle" is exempted from open or concealed carry restrictions. The law was tested in 1989, when an individual was cited for carrying a knife with a 4 and a half inch blade. The judge in that case ruled that the knife still met the definition of the law as legal carry. I haven't found more recent cases.

Switch Blades, Ballistic Blades, and Fixed Blade knives carried concealed, are another matter entirely.

    NORTH CAROLINA STATUTES AND CODES
    § 14-269. Carrying concealed weapons.
    Article 35.
    (a) It shall be unlawful for any person willfully and intentionally to carry concealed about his person any bowie knife, dirk, dagger, ...... except when the person is on the person's own premises.
    ......
    (d) This section does not apply to an ordinary pocket knife carried in a closed position. As used in this section, "ordinary pocket knife" means a small knife, designed for carrying in a pocket or purse, that has its cutting edge and point entirely enclosed by its handle, and that may not be opened by a throwing, explosive, or spring action.

Not accurate for Washington state. Here the laws vary from city to city. For instance fixed blade carrying is not legal in Seattle. Other cities it is legal. In my city 3 " folding or under are legal. Others it is 4" or longer.

Well of course it's not accurate. How can any law that violates one's right to self defense tools even be conscionable? I wear painter/contractor pants, with hammer loop, daily. Mayhaps I should openly carry my Estwing 28oz war er I mean framing hammer! Stupid laws are stupid.

I carry a 4 1/4 inch folding clip knife. If I ever have to use it in self defense, I will deal with the repercussion's of the polizi seeing it and having an issue with its length. But number one.... I will have an adequate size tool to defend myself regardless of stupid laws. YMMV

Erroneous data for Louisiana as well. No 3" limit on pocket knives/concealed knives. No problem with switchblades either with one caveat - you may not use it in the commission of a crime...

    Really?
