Now implemented in over 80 cities... interesting that they have kept this pretty quite on the level of national use.

I heard of it way back, but not recently. Can't help wondering how effective it's been in finding shooters.

GPS Timing helps these get the accuracy needed to define the area of source. With Multiple Microphones, and precise timing, it is really a trivial process to calculate the Bearing Lines from the Mic's, back to the source. Some Wx data is also required to do the Calc, like Humidity, Air Pressure, as well as Wind Speed, and Direction. One Block radius should be easily calculated... ......

Wonder if they react to fire works.. What size would it take to get a reaction..

If they would respond to a .22 then chances are quite good that most any small firecracker would cause a reaction...along with a backfire or a good rimshot on a snare drum.

Article stated that they could discriminate between a backfire and a rifle shot..

The article says it can also tell if an automatic weapon was used...believe everything your read? ;)

I don't know how effective it has been in the use of apprehending shooters. But think it would be a much faster means of alerting and redirecting police resources to an area where shots have been detected. Allowing them to throw a blanket of coverage in an area faster than waiting for a 911 call to tell them something is going on. If the sensors detect a large amount of gunfire, or automatic type fire they can then do an all hands type call vs limited response.

Under a martial law scenario, one could use this system against the .gov by causing false reports/diversions.... to pull assets from an area you need to get to or perform an operation in.... and send them to respond to a shot report elsewhere.... just a thought.

All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him.

I'm quite sure it will draw attention, the question is more whether it has increased the catch. And I have to mention the possible use as a feint as YD suggests.

These are self-contained and about the size of a 5USG Pail. They need just a small bit of power and an Internet connection, to function. Typically they are mounted on top of the highest Buildings, in the coverage area. This is done to help resolve the Sound Reflections off other buildings, or other flat surfaces, which can cause the Computed Bearing Lines to become ambiguous, due to limitations in the algorithm math. Unless you know where they are, it is a "Needle in the Haystack" type of hunt.

It's sad the private business owners partake in these acts.

Ones profit motive or scientific discovery at times can be turned into a tool to use against the people by others, which the originator of the item may have never anticipated.

The only thing this means is now they know where to find the body.

It is interesting that NY is so far behind the curve on implementing this technology... considering their stance on gun rights. You would have thought they would have jumped on the band wagon early on.
