Can anyone explain why Doxycycline has jumped up so high in cost?

    Be warned.
    ...............
Use of the tetracycline antibiotics group is problematic; they can:[citation needed]

    • Stain developing teeth (even when taken by the mother during pregnancy)
    • Discolor permanent teeth (yellow-gray-brown), from infancy and childhood to eight years old
    • Be inactivated by Ca2+ ion, so are not to be taken with milk, yogurt, and other dairy products
    • Be inactivated by aluminium, iron and zinc, not to be taken at the same time as indigestion remedies (common antacids and over-the-counter heartburn medicines)
    • Cause skin photosensitivity. so exposure to the sun or intense light is not recommended
    • Cause drug-induced lupus, and hepatitis
    • Cause microvesicular fatty liver
    • Cause tinnitus
    • Suppress sperm production.[12]
    • Interfere with methotrexate by displacing it from the various protein binding sites
    • Cause breathing complications, as well as anaphylactic shock, in some individuals
    • Affect bone growth of the fetus, so should be avoided during pregnancy
Caution should be exercised in long-term use with breastfeeding. Short-term use is safe; bioavailability in milk is low to nil.[13] In 2010, the FDA added tetracycline to its Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS).[14] The AERS contains a list of medications under investigation by the FDA for potential safety issues. The list is published quarterly and available online. The AERS cites a potential link between the use of tetracycline products and Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme.[14]

Tetracyclines are teratogens due to the likelihood of causing teeth discolouration in the fetus as they develop in infancy. For this same reason, tetracyclines are contraindicated for use in children under 8 years of age. They are, however, safe to use in the first 18 weeks of pregnancy.[

    A bottle of 100mg for 30 tablets is $89.-

Where did you find something so cheap?

Target pharmacy...perhaps was priced incorrectly, but if the going rate is $89/30 I'm not going to complain!

I have always trusted this source, above the others for one main reason -
They actually show their products are USP quality On The Label.

Without the USP certification, I have concerns about purity.

I have never seen USP listed on the products from Thomas Labs.

Two last points, the source I listed above also will 1) ship free of charge and they list the 2) expiration dates on their website.

That's nice, some folks like to have a guarantee because it makes them feel better. I myself trust tried and true methods also. Calvet has been a valid and sound source for me for years, and they were first introduced to the prepping community by Patriot Nurse. They are decent, not gonna kill you.

But I have added your link to my database as well.

All the side effects in post 3 are accurate. The explanation of teretogenicity with teeth staining is incorrect, but both are facts, just not related facts. The cost jump is interesting. Not sure why. I know it's popular the prepper community and it is a first line drug for chlamydia, that may have something to do with it. Here is an article from the CDC about the shortage of doxy and tetracycline, but it's from Jan 13 CDC - Doxycycline Shortage

    Current Drug Shortages S - Z

The FDA is still reporting a shortage of tetracycline as of a couple weeks ago. Perhaps since doxy is in the same drug class, it's demand is going up. I suspect also since doxy treats almost anything and is cheaper than most abx, it may be the go to drug for those wanting treatment on the cheap, further driving up demand.

If you check out the USP standard, then you would understand my comment. I don't do it just to feel good. Anything I stockpile, I want to be sure of. Take Care.

Oh, I fully comprehend what you are saying, and I don't mean to be rude. From my perspective, any non-profit organization working with the Federal Government isn't at the top of my list when it comes to priorities. The USP does function, and I do not want to welcome a world full of snake oil peddlers, and at the same time there are valid means to procure medicines outside the stamp of approval of USP. This is why I attribute the USP requirement as a "feel good" label.

To each his own, I guess. I know lots of folks who have used Calvetsupply.com and I will continue to do so.
