Not technically a review of survival gear but I fully expect this to last me a lifetime without need for replacing anything. Since it's long term, it fits my preps.

I hate shaving and tend to put it off by going a day or two in-between shaves. One of the ways I've learned to appreciate the necessary task of grooming my face is by converting from cartridge (expensive) razors to a DE (Double Edge safety razor). It takes a decent amount of time to get a good shave and you really have to pay attention to what your doing if you want to achieve BBS (Baby Butt Smooth). This slowing down of the process, combined with some high end gear has changed the ritual from one of loathing to one that I actually look forward to.

I started using a DE razor that I found in an antique shop and quickly realized that it wasn't so great.

I purchased a Merkur Futur from The Superior Shave (no SM affiliation but I really like his site and style of describing his wares) MERKUR Safety Razors (GERMANY) : Merkur Futur Safety Razor (Chrome or Matte Finishes)

This was paired with a Simpsons 'Best' Classic 1 NEW STUFF! NEW STUFF! : Simpsons Classic CL1 Best Badger Shaving Brush

Added an Edwin & Jagger lathering mug (black as seen top picture)and an assortment of soaps and I'm good to go.

I also purchased 60 yrs worth of double edge razors for $200 which have been vaccuum packed and placed into deep storage - my Shaving needs have been covered for my lifetime :)

Nice lifetime kit! I am still using throwaway razors. I haven't used a straight razor in years. I am 71 and have used a brush & mug for decades. I have somewhat sensitive skin (it can't take criticism) and a warm soapy shave is for me the best. I also do not shave anymore daily as I don't have to except when my beard/mustache start to get bushy. I do have a badger brush but have gone through a number of mugs. Old coffee mugs etc. My current mug is a cheap plastic one that has the benefit of bouncing if I drop it on the tile floor. I also tried a variety of soaps. I finally settled on what we use for bathing; Kirk's Original Coco Castile. We like this soap well enough to have stored cases of these bars as part of our prep supplies.
Your choice of razor is a frugal investment as those blades will save money over the ridiculously expensive throw-aways.

    Great minds must think alike...

    The "Bug Out" shaving solution:

I use a Merkur safety razor, and a backup in the storage supplies with one in the bug out kit. The Caswell Massey badger brush in its own case is especially great to have for the bug out bag. I use the zippered canvas bag to compartmentalize my bug out solution, making everything sensible and easier.

I haven't bought blades in quite a few years, and imagine I am good for at least twenty more.

@Brokor nice kit! that the Vision?
@stg58 Straight razor may be on my list someday.

I just realized that I called my gear 'high end'. The razor body was $78 and the badger brush (which is handmade) was around $110. The cost was higher up front but it's pretty much a one time buy.

I use double-edged safety razors in my travel kits but at home, I use straight razors. I have maybe 25 or so antique straight razors that I have acquired over the years. I have a nice set of Japanese wet-stones for restoring the edge and numerous leather stropes. I use a badger hair brush with a sterling silver shaving mug that I found in an antiques shot maybe 30 years ago. I have an electric hot-water pot and a towel steamer in my bathroom. I usually devote about half an hour to shaving and tending my razors in the mornings and find it very relaxing and productive think time.

@melbo I have no idea which Merkur it is that I use.

I tried straight razor shaving before, and as I recall it was one of the most uncomfortable and ridiculous moments of my life. I still keep one at home, but it's more as a historical reminder to me that a little facial hair is not worth losing sheets of my own flesh over...thus the safety razor. Some folks like straight razors. Good for them. ;)

this may be a stupid question but I bought a cheap shave brush a while back because I didn't know to much about straight razor shaving and using a brush. Some of the bristles will fall out as I use the brush do you have this problem with your brush?

When I shaved (5-oclock fred flinstone) the new brush would have a few for a week or so. New brush every year was the norm , till I gave up shaving & now use a sheep sheer. Shaving twice a day Sucked .. Seems it slipped from the top to the face. cut throats and strops were way back in the 60's for me , pimples were removed & then the pencil ,, Wow forgot all about the ritual .

New brushes lose a few anyway as you break them in and through out their life. The big trick is to not put them back in the soap mug and let them dry there. Buy or make a rack to hang them in. You also need to make sure you have good brushes to start with. If you are buying soap in tens it's a good idea to seal them up individually so you don't have dried up pucks by the time you get to the last three or four.

The Simpsons has lost a few hairs on the first couple uses but the 'fur' is totally different than the cheap brushes. My $15 brush almost hurts my face where this one is soft and is trimmed to be rounded on top. No comparison.

Brokor, I just started using the Personna Red blades. Wow, what a difference.
I tried the Merkur blades and they were great but the Personna's are the best I've found so far.

The Astra's have been relegated to SHTF barter...

41DmXcsc3uL. Yeah, I can usually get a few shaves out of these, and they are very nice. At about .20 per blade, it's a good deal even if they are a bit more costly than some other blades. Like you said, there's a difference, for sure. I haven't tried any other Personna blades, though.
