Gear Review My Shaving Rig - Merkur Futur and Simpsons Classic

Not technically a review of survival gear but I fully expect this to last me a lifetime without need for replacing anything. Since it's long term, it fits my preps.



I hate shaving and tend to put it off by going a day or two in-between shaves. One of the ways I've learned to appreciate the necessary task of grooming my face is by converting from cartridge (expensive) razors to a DE (Double Edge safety razor). It takes a decent amount of time to get a good shave and you really have to pay attention to what your doing if you want to achieve BBS (Baby Butt Smooth). This slowing down of the process, combined with some high end gear has changed the ritual from one of loathing to one that I actually look forward to.

I started using a DE razor that I found in an antique shop and quickly realized that it wasn't so great.

I purchased a Merkur Futur from The Superior Shave (no SM affiliation but I really like his site and style of describing his wares) MERKUR Safety Razors (GERMANY) : Merkur Futur Safety Razor (Chrome or Matte Finishes)

This was paired with a Simpsons 'Best' Classic 1 NEW STUFF! NEW STUFF! : Simpsons Classic CL1 Best Badger Shaving Brush

Added an Edwin & Jagger lathering mug (black as seen top picture)and an assortment of soaps and I'm good to go.

I also purchased 60 yrs worth of double edge razors for $200 which have been vaccuum packed and placed into deep storage - my Shaving needs have been covered for my lifetime

I use a Merkur safety razor, and a backup in the storage supplies with one in the bug out kit. The Caswell Massey badger brush in its own case is especially great to have for the bug out bag. I use the zippered canvas bag to compartmentalize my bug out solution, making everything sensible and easier.

I haven't bought blades in quite a few years, and imagine I am good for at least twenty more.

I just realized that I called my gear 'high end'. The razor body was $78 and the badger brush (which is handmade) was around $110. The cost was higher up front but it's pretty much a one time buy.

 

@melbo I have no idea which Merkur it is that I use.

I tried straight razor shaving before, and as I recall it was one of the most uncomfortable and ridiculous moments of my life. I still keep one at home, but it's more as a historical reminder to me that a little facial hair is not worth losing sheets of my own flesh over...thus the safety razor. Some folks like straight razors. Good for them.

 

The Simpsons has lost a few hairs on the first couple uses but the 'fur' is totally different than the cheap brushes. My $15 brush almost hurts my face where this one is soft and is trimmed to be rounded on top. No comparison.

 

Brokor, I just started using the Personna Red blades. Wow, what a difference.
I tried the Merkur blades and they were great but the Personna's are the best I've found so far.

The Astra's have been relegated to SHTF barter...

 

Yeah, I can usually get a few shaves out of these, and they are very nice. At about .20 per blade, it's a good deal even if they are a bit more costly than some other blades. Like you said, there's a difference, for sure. I haven't tried any other Personna blades, though.
