I suppose that a computer inside a bug out bag might be beneficial in some cases, but I just don't see it as practical overall. However, with people in specialized fields, who often may have a need, I see it as smart thinking. The reason I say this is because a "bug out" isn't really an optimum concept --it should be a last resort. The concept I rely upon is to conserve important personal data and educational data, and have it ready to access if needed. Insofar as training and education is concerned, the .pdf type files work well, and there is no lighter device to utilize these than the Kindle or Nook. Of course, the added capability of actual computing is a nice addition, in which case it would be wise to consider the implications involved with weight constraints and power issues surrounding any electronics, whether it be for home use or bug out. Netbooks are relatively small, but they sacrifice an optical device to allow for small size, and an external drive would be needed unless you are going for USB memory sticks and flash drives. Again, powering the device would need to be considered (recharging). This all adds up in weight. Then there is ruggedness, and durability as well as EMP proofing. Lots of thinking here. I have an older Panasonic Toughbook for home use and for the bug out vehicle. I also use secure DoD grade USB memory (Ironkey) for my data storage. This makes my information portable, but it is not Linux compatible. I carry a backup encrypted USB stick just for Linux, too. I do not use a pure "bug out" device for foot travel, but I am looking at the Kindle and hoping they might come out with a ruggedized version one day.
The free one is best. The Mr just had to trade in our iPhone 3 (old but worked fine far as I was concerned) for some new Galaxy Note 3. AT&T had some promotion that threw in a free tablet with each phone, so now we have 2. I never use mine. Am about to switch out the netbook in my BOB with it. Takes up a fraction of the space and weighs nothing.
I know what you mean by "old but worked fine far as I was concerned" my BOV is a 77 or 78 I don't know which one and I'm lazy and not getting the papers, but yeah it's an old chevy that this year I am going to morph into my BOV.....OK I'm gonna stop talking now.
Since I am a BugIn type.... I keep all my stuff on twin MacMini Severs here, but when either Momma or I travel we take the iPhones, iPads and iTouch's with us. iPhone for Phonecalls, iPads for GPS & Navigation Apps, and iTouch's for our Tunes.... The iPhone backs up the iPads for GPS & Navigation, and the iPads backup the iPhones for Comms, (Skype and FaceTime) and iTouch's for Tunes. All three keep our Calendars, Contacts, Essential .PDF Files and Notes. If any One Device gets it's Brains scrambled, we can reload it from any One of the others. We like the "Three is two, Two is one, and One is None" Principle.... .... YMMV.....
I don't really care for our tablet and I have never thought to pack one for just in case. I do find it interesting how people have USB's, pads, notebooks etc.... for bugging out. This could eventually be a downfall for me but I don't even have a cell phone & just don't think that way.
The wife gave me a tablet last year, and I rarely use it. It is light hand handy for quick connecting to the internet, however this model will not allow for broadband connections as I do not have wifi connections available all the time. The other part that I do not care for is that it is android op system... Linux needs to catch up in this area just for me..
Kindle Fire with a portable solar recharging unit, with spare charging battery works well for me. I also have a lighthouse (portable lamp) with USB port that can be recharged with the solar panels..... Give me three options for recharge.
Android is linux and Ubuntu is coming out with Ubuntu Touch, which actually looks pretty slick. Ubuntu on phones | Ubuntu Actually Apple stuff is pretty close to Linux too - it's BSD/Unix
Should be able to have full bandwidth on any USB Connections since they rarely use the buss at the same time...
Solar charger has two USB ports, and back up USB battery also has two USB ports. ( at least mine does.)
