Bitmessage is a P2P communications protocol used to send encrypted messages to another person or to many subscribers. It is decentralized and trustless, meaning that you need-not inherently trust any entities like root certificate authorities. It uses strong authentication which means that the sender of a message cannot be spoofed, and it aims to hide "non-content" data, like the sender and receiver of messages, from passive eavesdroppers like those running warrantless wiretapping programs. If Bitmessage is completely new to you, you may wish to start by reading the whitepaper attached below.

We'll be filling this new forum with BM related topics and discussions.

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time :)

I like this a lot, and will play around with it ASAP.... If it proves as good as they say, I might just request comments about modifying the MonkeyNet WhitePaper, to add this System for distributing PADs, and KeySets, as well as messages. @melbo, would it be possible to add the Encrypted PublicKey QR Code as a Legal Attachment Type to Posts? Then there could be a Thread, where Monkeys Post these, kind of like a Directory of Users. Just thinking out loud, and ahead.... Would solve the GPG KeySet Server issue we have discussed, in the past.

I will be the first to admit that I have no clue what @BTPost says when he talks all techno.

We should be able to attach anything to a post although I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "Legal Attachment Type"
A public key address could be added to a signature or an image of a QR code could be uploaded like any other attachment.

Using this or something like it would be a great way to distribute keys.

I haven't played with it yet but the UI seems a little complicated from what I've seen in the screenshots. Nothing that can't be learned.

Not wild about the QR, no way to read it in residence. Can the code be used cop/paste instead?

Yes, I would think that either the QR code or the text string code could be used. At least that's the way Bitcoin works. QR code is for convenience and mobile use.

Confirmed, copy/paste address would work fine. QR code just automates the process to include opening the application and populating the fields - same as a btc wallet.

I've set up a test address (address are disposable or can be reused although using and discarding is encouraged.) Took 2 minutes from download to address generation on a Win 7 box.

Oh MyLANTA! I honestly had no idea that there were that many people using BitMessage...

Just checked the "Network Status" tab and in 10 minutes I've been involved in processing almost 6000 messages.

    Holy CROW!

ETA - that was interesting...dropped off to almost nothing. Only at 7200 messages total in a half-hour. Means that either my firewall kicked in or traffic just came to a screeching halt.

Had to reboot (darn windows work box) and am now processing the queue. Not sure how long it takes to propagate throughout the system but I haven't seen your message yet.

reply sent and I see it acknowledged in the system -
I'm going to have to stop testing at work as I figure I triggered a few flags in the IT room ;)

will rm from this machine and set up again tonight on linux box. the above address will be gone forever as I set it up with random number rather than passphrase so it cannot be regenerated. 64 character pass will be used to set up future bm clients so they can have some persistence

    love the logo:

Ok, a little bit more understanding now...basically I was downloading the entire message blockchain for the first 10 minutes. Makes sense given that it's based on BitCoin.

yeah, if you bitcoin the entire concept of this makes a lot of sense.
    • multiple addresses that reach the same 'inbox'
    • disposable addresses
    • use of many addresses
    • etc

I had trouble getting the OSX Client to download, last night.... and the Windows Client was corrupt.... going to try again this afternoon, and see where I am.... Likely will load the Windows Client in my XP Virtual Machine, and go from there....

I only get 4 results. One for the monkey and 3 that are site analytics or keyword "things".

Don't sweat it @Motomom34 that is the same thing Momma says when I get talking to my Partners... and she is twice as smart as I am....
This is all very technical, but if it works as good as They Say, it will be something to add to your Computer, and learn how to use. Totally
unCrackable, and unTraceable, by ANYONE, including the Letters Boys.... We will see about publishing a " Monkey How To" in the near future.
