I have been lurking on this site for awhile and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to register so I can put my 2 cents in. I have been in the military for awhile and hopefully will medically retire in the next few months. As an MP in the Army I have gained a lot of experience on the military side in combat and civil situations. I am loyal to the Constitution and not the President. My area of study during my tenure in the Army has been tracking and evasion, if you can't evade you can't track. Physical Security and penetration testing is also an interest that I have pursued over the past 6 years or so. I am very opinioned and stick to my ideas and beliefs.

Are y'all familiar with a Seal Squid Occifer by the name of Richard Marchinko? He took Security and Penetration to levels unheard of in the name of Counter terrorism and Nuke security. Unfortunately he didn't play nice with his fellow occifers, and ruined some careers and made some serious enemies. There are both fiction and non fiction books by or about him. Red cell would be an example. If you want a good laugh, look him and his exploits up.

I was tasked with attempting penetration of a nuke capable (cannot confirm or deny actual presence of nuke weapons) aircraft carrier in Mayport, Fl. Usually the Occifer upon the tasked ship would call the target and tell them we were coming. Thus you got caught most of the time and security stats looked good and everybody was fat dumb and happy, but security sucked. I told my command duty officer I would only do a penetration test if the ship on my paperwork was left blank, and if I had 72 hours to complete the attempt. This guy agreed with me that security actually sucked, and went along. The next day about midnight with a can of beer prop, I staggered towards the occifers brow drinking my beer, killed it at the foot of the brow in full display from the quarterdeck, and missed the 55 gallon trash drum I threw the mty can at. In civies at the quaterdeck with my ballcap low on my brow I thumb covered my ships seal sticker on the ID I flashed and reported my return aboard, and saluted. I was waved aboard and asked if I needed assistance. I declined and went below. I had a roll of duct tape, several stacked coffee cups, and a magic marker. I planted several time or trip wire simulated bombs and then found my way to the wardroom where upon identifying the command duty occifer there simulated a bomb detonation. Told them we were all dead, that it was a drill, and presented my paperwork authorizing the test. Heads rolled, the whole security issue was looked into, and the good old boy alert sytem supposedly went away, at least for awhile. I considered it grand fun.

I learned of homemade shaped charges from those books. I have read the first five. But my library has no more of them. I shall put in another request for the remainder of the series.

Maybe not so [BSf] More than one time, I've crossed a tender quarter deck headed to the outboard nest without escorts. Tenders (sometimes) have neat stuff that could raise a ruckus.

(However, it was tac --. Maybe some day I'll relate a theft of material from the tender for my division. Always wondered how the supply officer reacted, it was tonnage. Our diving officer couldn't explain how come we didn't need as much ballast as he calculated.)

Swampbilly had it right. The exercise was called a Bravo Zulu security drill. Most all were stopped at the quarterdeck for the reason I mentioned. Carriers in my opinion were easier targets than small boys. The Quarterdeck watch was all enlisted. Most ring knocker occifers in my opinion as a chief for 11 years were arrogant and instead of requesting to come aboard would "report their return" without giving their name or bothering to shift their name from "ashore to aboard", seemingly expecting everyone on a ship of 5000 or so to know who the heck they were. Also no enlisted likes to deal with an obviously intoxicated arrogant occifer. As for my story possibly being BS, I can assure it was not. I was involved with the PRP (personnel reliability program), and nuke weapons security for 18 of 22 years that I served. As a chief I was often the senior nuke weapons security instructor aboard (I served almost exclusively on small combatants (FF's, DDG's CG's etc). I was pissed at the way BZ drills were held, and decided to rock the boat. It made quite a splash and security stand downs and conferences were held all over the east coast. I attended one and ignoring a gag order pointed out exactly what I had done and why. Hey, they asked for input and questions. I just told it how it was and why it sucked and was such a freakin joke. It wasn't too long after that that I received an unscheduled special (supposed to be negative) evaluation, that said if I strongly felt something was wrong I would state what was on my mind without concern for rank or authority. I made chief in the next selection. Go figure
