    Newsweek

July 3-10, 2006 issue - This fall, the World Hunting Association, a new competitive league, will feature 10 hunters in a deer-hunting tournament ... not shooting bullets at anything. In an attempt to lure viewers who may be turned off by gore, the association's planners have dubbed this competition "nonlethal"—meaning that hunters will shoot tranquilizer darts from bows, guns and blowguns, and veterinarians will be on site to attend to the deer after they are hit. "It sits better with the public," says WHA founder David Farbman. "Hunting's not just about the kill."

That's a matter of debate. The National Rifle Association has pronounced the scheme "not hunting," says Andrew Arulanandam, an NRA spokesman, because it runs afoul of hunting ethics. Hunting is about the kill, Arulandam contends, and not about wounding animals with nonlethal darts. "They can possibly injure the animal," he says. "In hunting you are supposed to bring down your animal in the most humane way possible." This "catch and release" hunting has also been condemned by the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Karl Zainitzer, one of the hunters who has signed on to compete, doesn't have a problem with the unconventional premise. "People that would never go hunting will now turn this hunting tour on," he says. (Deals are in the works to televise it this fall.) Farbman is similarly unfazed. If this competition doesn't win the hearts and minds of nonhunting fans, he has some other ideas up his sleeve, including donating money to charity and launching a program to feed the hungry—with venison.

This is NOT hunting!! Better to use a shoulder stocked camera, if you are not planning to eat it. [rnt]

Well they are right though, its not just about the kill, its also about the good meat. Besides, it just feels to unnatural to be on the same side of anything as the idiots with Pepole Eating Tastey Animals.

I propose a new sport. Idiot shooting. How about we follow the cast of that show around with tranqs and when they make the shot, we shoot them. When they come around again, we shoot them again. We keep doing this and see if they like to be 'harassed' or just plainly 'hurt' when the tranq hits them. I vote for we do it. Any others? :D

Actualy I was thinking of the tastey meat from hitting them with a normal bullet. On a side note though, I know at least for a while and I think htey may still do it at some plants, I have heard from a few folks who worked in slaughter houses that they had some kind of injection they gave the animals being killed for butchering for human consumption that killed them almost instantly. Kind of makes that Tbone from the store a little less appealing. lol Maybe EL would know what this stuff was.

Sorry MM I thought you were talking about drugging the animal for the kill.

Never heard of that MM. Any toxin introduced to the animal that would kill it would presumably kill whomever ate it.

Tranquillizers? I love it? THINK OF HOW MUCH FURTHER THE GAME SUPPLY WOULD STRETCH IF WE ARE ABLE TO KNOCK A DEER DOWN, TAKE A LEG FOR DINNER AND LET HIM ROAM FREE UNTIL WE NEED MORE MEAT? Be much easier to track and nab a three-legged deer the next time around too. Probably get some subsidy from the Dept. of Agriculture, what with all the savings annually on crop damage (can't jump the fence anymore). Boys, we're on to something great here...I need more drugs.

Here you go MM, here is FSIS Directive 6900.2 Rev. 1

    "PART IV – STUNNING METHODS
Appropriate stunning methods are required for an establishment to be in
compliance with the HMSA. When stunning is done correctly, animals feel no pain, are rendered instantly unconscious, and remain unconscious until slaughtered. There are four methods of stunning approved for livestock. A summary of these approved stunning methods appear below (refer to 9 CFR sections 313.5, 313.15, 313.16 and 313.30).

    A. What are the general regulatory requirements related to approved
    stunning methods?
    FSIS DIRECTIVE 6900.2
    REVISION 1
    Chemical; carbon dioxide
Regulatory requirements for the use of carbon dioxide as a humane method of
slaughter are specified in section 313.5 and include, among other things, the following:

    1) Carbon dioxide gas may be used to slaughter and handle sheep, calves and swine.

    2) The carbon dioxide gas shall be administered in a chamber so as to produce surgical anesthesia (a state where an animal feels no painful sensation) before the animal is shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut. Animals shall be exposed to the carbon dioxide gas in a way that will accomplish the anesthesia quickly and calmly.

    3) Gas concentrations and exposure times shall be graphically recorded throughout each day’s operation.

    4) It is necessary that the operator be skilled, attentive, and aware of his or her responsibility.

    Mechanical; captive bolt
Regulatory requirements for the use of captive bolt stunners as a humane method of slaughter are specified in section 313.15 and include, among other things, the following:

    1) Captive bolt stunners may be used to slaughter and handle sheep, swine, goats, calves, cattle, horses, mules, and other equines.

    2) The captive bolt stunners shall be applied to livestock so as to produce immediate unconsciousness in the animals before they are shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut.

    3) The stunning operation is an exacting procedure and requires a well-trained and experienced operator who must use the correct detonating charge with regard to kind, breed, size, age, and sex of the animal to produce the desired results.

    4) Stunning instruments must be maintained in good repair.
    Mechanical; gunshot
Regulatory requirements for the use of gunshot as a humane method of slaughter are specified in section 313.16 and include, among other things, the following:

    1) Shooting by firearms may be used to slaughter and handle cattle, calves, sheep, swine, goats, horses, mules, and other equines.

    2) A single shot delivery of a bullet or projectile into the animal is to produce immediate unconsciousness in the animal before it is shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast or cut.

    3) Firearms must be maintained in good repair.

    4) The shooting operation is an exacting procedure and requires a well-trained and experienced operator who must be able to accurately direct the projectile to produce immediate unconsciousness.

    5) The operator must use the correct caliber firearm, powder charge and type of
ammunition to produce instant unconsciousness in the animal.

6)Electrical; stunning or slaughtering with electric current
Regulatory requirements for the use of electric current as a humane method of
slaughter are specified in section 313.30 and include, among other things, the following:

    1) Electric current may be used to slaughter and handle swine, sheep, calves, cattle, and goats.

    2) The animal shall be exposed to the electric current in a way that will accomplish surgical anesthesia (a state where an animal feels no painful sensation) quickly and effectively before they are shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut.

    3) It is necessary that the operator of electric current application equipment be skilled, attentive, and aware of his or her responsibility.

    4) Suitable timing, voltage and current control devices shall be used to ensure that each animal receives the necessary electrical charge to produce immediate
    unconsciousness."

I have been out of slaughter for about 12 years, but it looks as though nothing has changed and there is no "magic" injection.
