I got an orchid for Mother's Day. I have never had success getting them to re-bloom but I have determination. So they grow naturally in HI? Yours are beautiful. Any secrets to pass on to a novice orchid grower?
I had the just add ice type prior. I added ice and they did nothing but shrivel up. This one is a soak for 5 minutes. lets hope that will work. I refuse to admit there is a plant I cannot grow.
The tag says to put in water or the pot in water for 5 minutes. I think part of the issue is the elevation. I know when I buy a cake mix it has high altitude directions so maybe that is the issue with my orchid.
I have no idea. What's in the pot with the orchid? Usually there is special orchid potting soil and rocks or gravel. We just water daily and let drain. No soaking. Mom is an orchid person and always told me too much water kills the orchid. Try watering without soaking and see if that helps. Orchids tend to like partial sun. The ones in the pictures are in full sun.
It looks like bark in the pot. So soaking is bad? Makes sense, the orchid dealer is in business to sell orchids. My husband keeps buying them cause I keep killing them. I think maybe I should try your Mom's method. Those orchids in your pictures are beautiful.
It is bark, I'm quite sure. Some orchids are epiphytes, IIRC, they take their moisture from the air in humid climates. Not a humid climate, seems to me you'll have to add water. There are also some varieties that grow on or in the ground, and that's all I know or think I know from when I lived in Singapore.
I have a question, it does nothing with blooms but I am curious. Q: You live on HI, not sure which one but it applies to all the islands. If society broke down there would be no more shipments to the islands. Carrying capacity. Can the islands support all the people on it? I know with the mainland most have no clue how to fend for themselves but there is land to plant and animals to harvest, especially out west and in the rural areas. But being on an island, those who are there will be there if things break down unless they have a boat.
At least there are outrigger canoes to reach the other islands that have more space for meat growing (horses, sheep and so forth) where the tourists are less apt to be found. (I could eat pineapples to the exclusion of a LOT of other stuff.)
That is an interesting thought @ghrit , have an island for food production. I don't know the population of the islands because I figure the numbers would be incorrect because of the tourists. I know Hawaii has the fruits that @Hanzo has shown us but I did wonder about meat. I know that Rosie O'Donnell lives on one of the islands and I think she raises goats? I read that somewhere, but HI could look to the ocean for fishing.
We have pigs, goats, deer, birds and of course, seafood. Oahu is populous, but the other islands not so much.
