HSUS to pay $15.75 million to settle racketeering lawsuit

Yet another move to control anyone they do not agree with.
“Most troubling is that this settlement will be paid with donations intended to help animals.

Will Coggin, senior research analyst for the Center for Consumer Freedom, responded to the recent announcement that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and other co-defendants will pay $15.75 million to settle a racketeering lawsuit brought by Feld Entertainment. This company is the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The activist animal rights group was involved in alleged illegal witness payments as part of a scheme to pursue malicious litigation against the circus.
“This historic case has exposed the despicable tactics of the Humane Society of the United States and other animal rights fanatics, and the settlement sends a message they will be held accountable for their actions,” says Coggin. “Most troubling is that this settlement will be paid with donations intended to help animals.
“Americans should think twice before donating any money to HSUS,” he continues. “It’s likely not being spent the way its ads lead people to believe.”
According to The Republic in Columbus, Ind., the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals already had agreed separately to pay more than $9 million to settle. Further, it noted that Feld issued a statement saying the final settlement this week is "a vindication of its practices."
The case originally stemmed from a complaint filed under the Endangered Species Act, alleging misconduct by Feld toward its Asian elephants. A U.S. District Court ultimately ruled the case was "frivolous," "vexatious," and "groundless and unreasonable from its inception." This stunning settlement finally brings to a close litigation that's dragged on for 14 years.

I'm not surprised by this. And I don't donate to the Humane Society or ASPCA. And PETA can kiss mine. I don't give money to someone else and expect them to deal with homeless/neglected/abused animals. Of our six 4legged animals, 2 were orphans, 1 is a stray that showed up and let us know they were home, and 1 was abandoned as a baby. We found them all ourselves and gave them a home. That's my contribution to animal welfare. That and saving the birds that are somehow getting into my room from our cats.

I posted a thread about this some time ago. The Humane Society is a front for a radical animals rights group. They run ads on TV of abused animals and solicit donations to help them. It's all a lie. IIRC, from the article I posted, they manage no shelters, and only a minute amount of money actually goes for any kind of "humane" cause. Nearly all the money they collect goes to fund radical political activism.

Before I knew better I used to give to HSUS and ASPCA. Kinda tipped off when I'd get free gloves and other things through the mail all via MY contributions I'm sure. I know someone in NYC that says the ASPCA routinely changes their building facade for really no reason. Complete waste of money people believe are going to help animals. Not at all surprised by this.

If I really wanted to support an animal charity, I would donate directly to my local shelter, with either money, food, or by fostering animals.

Yes, since then I've concentrated on local rescues. I see directly where my money is going as I am able to donate to the vet to cover an animals bills (i.e. a specific animal who had been abused and rescued in need of medical attention).

There have been a couple hundred animals through this house, in the last couple of years. We have done short term fosters, transports, heartworm positive, and litters. Big dogs, ankle biters, and purebreds and mutts.

These orgs are mostly fronts to put extravagant salaries into the top leadership's pockets. They feed on sob stories to milk bleeding hearts out of cash. Sure there are abuses and I surely hate to see it going on but they seldom do any real good.

You can judge a society, a people or a person by how they treat their animals. I was very impressed recently when I was in Cyprus. They round up the stray dogs and cats, have them spayed and neutered, check to see if their healthy, then they put a small tag in their ear and let them go.Free to roam the island and fend for themselves or be adopted by anyone who wants them. All of the street lights have a metal pan chained to the bottom of them. Instead of throwing away uneaten food people put it in the pans for the stray animals. They have a special basin on the public water faucets that stays full of water for the animals. With the tourists and the locals they stay well fed. It is common to see them around any of the myriad of restaurants around. Talk about a dog's life!! Plenty of food to eat, lay around basking in the sun all day on a beautiful Mediterranean island. That would be heaven. Well, except for the neutering part.

That's one of the problems with American style generosity. People want to feel like they're giving and doing something good, but without seeing the problem up close. Politicians here even tell people to give to organizations rather than directly to homeless people for this reason or that. Unfortunately, when other people decide how to spend your money it ends up buying a new yacht for some fat cat half the time.

The story of the Good Samaritan describes most Americans as the guy who kept on walking. "I gave at the office".

That's an excellent POV. I've never looked at it like that. I've always been a "dog guy" but after my divorce (I wanted the Kids to have our family dog) I never got around to getting another one. Didn't think it was fair to keep one cooped up in an RV dragged from oil field to oil field man camp. When Mrs. Tully and I got together she already had a cat. Since then, we've had a stray or two come and stay then leave or maybe something got them. One of the strays had kittens then died. Long story short, that's how I ended up with my 3 travel companions..;) Gotta tell ya, I love those dang cats. Never thought I'd get attached to a cat, let alone three of them, but here we are. So I guess we've done our good deed too:)

The HSUS does not support the animals, it supports the leadership of this organization.

Do not donate to HSUS, give to your local animal shelter. This is like donating to the Red Cross...

Yes by all means act locally. Animal cruelty and abuse is a very real and persistent problem for which a lot of people need a good hard kick in the... But like many have indicated here, for every good cause there's another just taking advantage of other peoples conscience and good will. Humanity 101.

I used to know a couple women who were HSUS members. They were real 'whirlybirds'...... total dingbats. And one accompanied LEO on raids of 'animal abusers', not all of whom actually were. People get 'swatted' by the animal freaks too. This can cause extreme anxiety for the animals as well as the people. The owners can get criminal records even if they did nothing wrong. The animals get taken away. Who knows what becomes of them?
HSUS are terrorists, no different from the ELF.

We've even gone to the animal shelter and adopted a couple of border collies to be placed with good families... OMG what a nightmare!
