Colorado Governor to Sheriffs: Hey, Sorry About That New Gun Control Law

Back in March 2013 (and after a massive cash dump from former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg), Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed new anti-gun legislation into law.

Colorado's governor signed bills Wednesday that place new restrictions on firearms, signaling a change for Democrats who have traditionally shied away from gun control in a state with a pioneer tradition of gun ownership and self-reliance.

The legislation thrust Colorado into the national spotlight as a potential test of how far the country might be willing to go with new gun restrictions after the horror of mass killings at an Aurora movie theater and a Connecticut elementary school.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper signed bills that require background checks for private and online gun sales and ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.

The debate in the Democratic-controlled Legislature was intense, and Republicans warned that voters would make Democrats pay. The bills failed to garner a single Republican vote.

In response to the legislation, a few months later Colorado State Senate President John Morse and State Senator Angela Giron were recalled in a historic defense of Second Amendment rights. Further, not only did Colorado sheriffs refuse to enforce the law, they sued over it.

Now, Hickenlooper is apologizing for signing the legislation without meeting with sheriffs beforehand and is admitting his office did not expect the backlash.

Governor John Hickenlooper is offering an apology to some of his fiercest rivals on the issue of gun control: Colorado’s sheriffs.

The governor’s mea culpa came Friday when he spoke before an assembled group of sheriffs from around Colorado.

A Hickenlooper spokesman confirms that the Governor apologized to the sheriffs for not meeting with them prior to the passage of gun control bills they opposed. Hickenlooper also said his administration didn’t do a good job anticipating pushback on gun control. According to his spokesman, Hickenlooper pledged better communication in the future.

Funny how apologies like this always tend to happen right around election time.

There won't be a future, politically speaking --for him. He went too far, and it looks like the Sheriffs and the people (enough of them) will have the final say. And THAT is how it should work.

He's sorry but he's not going to do anything about it. "Sorry" is nothing but BS.

I don't know about that. I can't get a feel of how people are feeling. This govs race is going to be real interesting. The CO Republican party here is real slimy and I myself would rather spit on them then give them a nickle. Third party gets many votes because people do not like R & D party so that is why the D's swept the state last election.

Divide and conquer. And most clones do tend to vote for who is perceived to be the "winner" like it's a competition. Still, I think the Dems are gonna be obsolete this election after this very unpopular and unconstitutional act.

Yeah, unfortunately she screwed the voters since by resigning they were able to appoint someone in her place. So the Democrats maintained a majority in the CO Senate until the elections this fall.

The biggest thing about the idiot in charge up there is he basically keeps telling people "someone" on his staff made a promise to push the legislation. Of course an anonymous staff member makes for a convenient scapegoat:

And of course, "misspoke" means "conveniently forgot" or "lied to cover my actions when I probably took money from Bloomberg to sign the bills"

I would love to see his bank accounts or his "reelection campaign funds" after the meeting with Bloomberg.

The saga continues in CO. Hickenlooper is now clarifying his remarks.

He must have made his base angry because news is now that he still would have signed it. It just amazes me, he didn't know he was being filmed so basically he admitted he was just spouting off not really meaning what he was saying.

Bottomline, Hick is a liar and I think his voters are okay with that.

Wow. Just wow. Caught in a lie and just blew it off and nothing is said or done about it. Disgust doesn't even begin to describe what I feel towards this walking piece of excrement.

Will the voters in Colorado remember this intrusion on their rights come election time?

@Dunerunner don't get me wrong, the infringement is nothing to ignore but it is part of the problem and I wonder if it isn't simply an extension of the attitude they seem to have of "do as I say, not as I do" and being above the law. The morally bankrupt nature of the majority of "elected" officials is nothing short of nauseating. I've finally storm off of news and will even go so far as to leave the break room at work if they turn it from sports (equal waste of time) to the news. What's going on in this country loyalty makes me sick to my stomach and the complicity of the media just makes it that much worse.

1% serve in the military, there are dwindling numbers of "citizens" who do not exercise their right and dutifully vote in elections. It is the apathy of the people that breeds the "We can do anything with impunity" mind set of politicians. I am as disgusted as you with the tag along media and the state of our nation. My hope is that an overwhelming majority of freedom loving Americans emerge and change the direction come the next general election.

Now he is backpedaling with statements that he would sign the bills again if they came to him now...

Apparently he only said what he did to the sheriffs because he was unaware it was being recorded...or at least that is what he is now saying to his base of base Dems...

Unfortunately, word is his opponent is as bad as he is but with an R after his name.
