I had a little stent placed in one of my heart arteries a couple of weeks ago and the Dr put me on some pretty serious blood thinners. I got to thinking about doing some shooting with my 12 ga shottie and some of my rifles, especially my 30.06. I have experienced some bruising on my shoulder from them in the past and figure they're going to do some serious bruising from here on out. Anyone have any ideas about how to lessen recoil or how to pad so as to avoid bruising? I'd hate to think I can't hunt anymore with them because of the blood thinners. Kajun
Ouch. Not sure but thinners will definitely make you bruise easier. Maybe find the thickest recoil pad you can and also try to put a pad in your shirt/vest?
One of my MNs was beating me up pretty badly (worse than the M1) before I started the aspirin regimen, so I added a Past Recoil Shield which helped quite a bit. Even with the aspirin, no troubles since. It may be enough, but no way to know without trying, so long as your cardio guy is willing to let you shoot.
I've been taking aspirin (325mg) and Plavix (75mg) for about 15 years now and haven't had any problems with shoulder bruises. I do cut myself or scrape against blackberry thorns and notice 5-10 minutes later blood running down my arm and dripping off my fingertips, but no problems from shooting. JME/YMMV...
ghrit, thanks tons for the info. Never knew such a thing as the Past pad existed! I ordered one of the super mag Past shields and foam recoil pads. Between those 2, I shouldn't have any problems. Kajun
I hope you bought it from Amazon (shameless plug for a site support income source.) That's become the first place I look for anything. If nothing else, you get clues to chase other sources. They don't do guns and ammo, but about everything else related is there.
I shoot a Rem 270 BDL and it has a nice kick.... but I have a good aftermarket P-pad that absorbs a lot of the recoil.
I am on blood thinner too, after a major medical event a couple years ago. Doc says it'll be a lifetime thing, to prevent further clots. But I still shoot, and haven't noticed any problems. Haven't shot my milsurps much lately, been doing more hunting with my .270WSM rifle - that baby kicks with factory ammo! My handloads are somewhat milder, but have dropped two deer like the Hammer of God. No need to beat myself up with heavy recoil! ;-) I do use a slip-on rubber recoil pad, and it really helps.
Reduced recoil loads is what some use or make ? Shotgun, Switch to Tee-Quids or low brass as the rest of the U.S. calls them.
