Winchester 1906 receiver problem

Looking for any help on remedying a problem my FIL has with his Win 1906.

First off the barrel and stock have been replaced, so there is no collector value to the firearm, it's just a good squirrel killer.

He was having a problem with the rounds going to the left when loading, so I offered to take a look at it. First thing I noticed, compared to my 06, was that the action was stiff, VERY stiff. When removing the bolt for cleaning, I about had to pry it out of the receiver, it was that tight.

I noticed lots of wear on the side of the bolt (shiny new metal) where I did not have that on mine (it's nice to have something to compare to).

I pulled out the calipers and found that the rear opening in the receiver for the bold is a full 1/32" narrower than the front of the opening.

I can only suspect that at some point in the past when the barrel was replaced, the receiver put in a vice and caused this problem.

Is there any way to fix this? thought about prying open the rear of the receiver but didn't want the receiver to go into a )( shape (if that makes any sense.

I'll try to get some pictures tonight, if that will help.

    TIA

Can you take measurements at roughly 60 degree intervals around the inside of the receiver ring, front and back? If so, that should show up any out of roundness from squeezing the receiver during barrel change.

On the 06' the bolt is square'ish.

See the attached image, item 12, should move easily in the receiver, but it's pinched at the rearward side of things in the receiver.

I will edit the original post to say 1906, instead of '06 incase there is any confusion on the models.

Ah!! Thought you were talking 30-06, not the little guy!! I have one of those (earlier model, same thing except cosmetics) and yes, it's an odds on bet it's distorted for some reason. The slide should almost drop open when unlatched. Lay a straight edge on both sides, or improvise, and see if they are parallel. They should be, and both should be parallel with the bore. You can check that with a tight fitting (and straight) cleaning rod, tightly wrapped. The cleaning rod does NOT have be be bore centered, but has to be aligned. You are looking for parallel not any particular difference in dimensions. I think you might find that only one side is bent.

Ok, got the bolt fixed, it now slides smoothly. Both sides were slightly out of parallel with the barrel, one more than the other. Taking my time, I was able to get things pretty close to normal, at least the action is smooth again.

Next problem, when loading a round the bullet is hitting the chamber at about the 7 to 8 o'clock position. I'm thinking the carrier may just be worn out, but can't really tell. Of course, everywhere I look they are sold out of the carriers for S, L, LR and only have S or L options..

Very well could be a misalignment, given that the receiver was bent. If there is side to side wiggle, look to the pivot for wear. Also, look at the spring that lifts the carrier. I had to find one, then doubled it with the existing spring to lift the carrier to full height. (I got mine at Wisner's, you might check with The Bastige, too.) And if you find a source for carriers, let me know. The hack that drilled mine out for lr (vs longs that were original) drilled too deep.

Yeah, there's LOTs of play in just about every pivot point. Both the 1906's I have do this so I don't know if that's the problem or not. I'll have to compare exactly how much play is in each.

So far the only source of the carriers I can find is ebay, not too keen on paying $100+ for the carrier, but if that's the only place I guess I'm stuck with that. I've emailed a couple of places that were referenced on a threat on the rim fire central forum as well, no response yet but I'll let you know what they say.

Now that I've go the 1906 working (better), my FIL gave me his Savage/Stevens 59A 410 bolt action to "fix". Geesh, wish I could work on a gun I could find parts for :)

The 59A has a broken bolt, still operatable, but if you pull the bolt back too far to eject/load the bolt will come apart. Found the broken part, now fo find a new bolt group. Ebay here I come. Though there is one on gunbroker, whole gun, that I could part out.

FIL gun needs the safety reinstalled, bead on the end of the barrel and bolt fixed. Gun on gun broker won't load from the magazine. Sound like a match made in heaven to me.
