I've been doing the guerrila garden thing at some of my fishin' spots for awhile now....
I wouldn't put ANYTHING on that list down and expect a ROI.
    Seed potatoes....now you're talking...
Kale - yup - but not from seed...you gotta put it in a few inches tall and strong and even then it's "ify" cuz of critters.
I might start doing some watercress just to see if it will go wild...but not much as I really don't like eating it.

He might make the local news when hikers find his body in the spring. Crap, gardening can be difficult at home when you have supplies available. Does he plan on dropping a few seeds on the ground and coming back next week and seeing a salad bar? Good luck with that.

I try like heck to garden at home but it seems that the only things I can grow well repeatedly is peppers and cucumbers. Doesn't stop me from continuing to try though. :)

I struggle with peppers...suspect if you have them down pat it's just a matter of time before you master many other things. Something ALWAYS fails in my garden each year but like u said...aint gonna stop me from continuing to try....quite the opposite in fact....gardening is a life-long-learning thing and if you move around and change climates...it's like starting over every time.

I'm coming to the same conclusion.

I think that for now on in this thread, I'll treat the subject as a thought experiment rather than providing agony aunt advice to Walter Mitty wanderers.

Another problem with the garden in a backpack approach to self sufficiency in the wilderness, is that it usually takes many weeks from propagation until cropping, even with optimal growing conditions. With only a couple of weeks of food in the backpack, how will the hunger gap be filled? I note that his planned backpack inventory does not include any gardening or propagating tools.

Instead of relying on what can be carried, why not travel into the heart of darkness via canoe or boat along a navigable river....upstream for preference ? More supplies and equipment can be carried, and exiting is a lot easier when walking out, half starved.

Edit: I also note that the backpack contains no food preserving and food storage supplies and equipment. Winter will be tough without stored food grown through the Spring to Autumn period. I'm thinking...maybe a Tardis style backpack do the trick.

also, heading off to the bush in the winter time, is going to leave you with limited choices.
Do you know what wild plants you can eat? Which ones will kill you (quickly or painfully slowly)
what game can you legally hunt at this time of year.
what areas you intend to travel are subject to flash flood or extreme temperature swings.

You would be best served to do a lot of research before heading out. Just sayin'

  8. ok for the last part. i looked it up and especially in winter if you dig only a few feet down the temperature drops stupid low its like -20 2 feet down or something. throw some rocks down and the food in a ziplock and I'm good. i was planning on planting in a few different places. there aren't many tools that you need for gardening that you can't do with your hands. i got a little pack shovel too i forgot to say. the food i have is preserved. hahhaha. its freeze dried non gmo 25 year shelf life. i just adde some hemp seeds to my inventory too so tasty and good added to pretty much anything soups salad meats

Actually, temperature underground rises with depth. Go down to the depth of frost and you'll find ground that does NOT freeze. Your research on that is fatally flawed.

You will also find that digging with your hands is problematic in the mountains. More often than not, you'll find rocks that have no wish to be moved. (And your pack shovel just ran your ruck up another couple pounds.)

What you read is wrong. It is the basis of geothermal heating. At 6' deep, you have a year round 56°. I helped build a solar house that uses this effect (I know it for a fact) by insulating the walls, and allowing the floor to stay concrete, yo get heat in winter, and cooler in summer. (Gospel, deal with it)
Geothermal heating pumps fluid in pipes, under ground to gather heat or lose heat as needed.
