Well it is actually about 3 miles away, but i get to see it every time I go out my door.

The radar equipped JLENS aerostat will fly at an altitude up to 10,000 feet above sea level, giving it a much longer detection range than ground-based radars, providing radar coverage up to 340 miles – an area which includes the National Capital Region (NCR). Input from JLENS will also feed to the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, to increase decision time in defending the airspace over the NCR. The aerostats will fly 24 hours a day, except in times of severe weather or required maintenance. The system’s ground elements include a mobile mooring station, radar and communications payloads, a processing station, and associated ground support equipment.

Aberdeen Proving Ground was chosen as the exercise location because it provides coverage over the NCR, has sufficient ground area for the two JLENS aerostat sites, and controls its FAA approved restricted airspace, which supports the exercise without interfering with the mid-Atlantic coast air traffic corridors.

Close, but not quite cigar material. The stadium things don't hang around, these things are tethered (like WWII barrage balloons.) Makes sky ugly as well as possibly putting eyes in back yards. I like the concept in war zones, but not for general spying and threat detection in non combat areas.

We had those once down here, Hurricanes ran them off, Also the power comes from an umbilical cord.

The safest place to be is probably near a JLENS
    aerostat :)

Privacy concerns are understandable, at this point this is just a radar, no cameras or other payloads :)

They can put one in MBY [winkthumb]

"They say" there are presently no cameras on board. What prevents them from putting cameras on the damn things and not telling the public?

wonder if a small camera drone would be under its radar footprint??

    ;)

Yep GH, they could, although that would not do anything for the primary mission which is air and missile defense :)

They can still put one in MBY [winkthumb]

A camera payload would most likely be highly visible from miles away with good optics. They could spy on the public and the public can spy back ;)

Tsk, tsk. Who says the mission won't be changed? I can easily see them used for battlefield intel while shooting is going on. And more, a stable platform is golden for analysis of photo info in real time as in tracking OJ without the bother of launching a chopper..

Yep, however a sophisticated enemy could easily take them down :( they are sitting ducks tethered to the ground station :(

My first thought was to get the heck out of that environment. #1 the mission could change anytime as @ghrit mentioned.... If the SHTF, they have a floating platform to watch everything.... if you can see them, the can definitely see you. #2 If it is important enough to have this type of floating detection system 24/7/365.... then you are in a high threat, strike target area (think Nuke). #3 If you are sitting in an area that has this high of a degree on aerial surveillance due to the threat nature..... this will be the first AO secured heavily by TPTB placing you under the military thumb immediately... not much you can do after that as far as bugging out or other activities without monitoring.
    Just my .2 cents.

oh, my AO sucks... lets see, Fort Meade, Edgewood Arsenal, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Bethesda Naval Station, Bollings AFB, DC, yeah all the above are less the 45 minuets away, some only 5 minuets. That combined with the tax you to death state of MD, it has been time to go. Unfortunately, can't leave yet, have about 8 to 10 years, so I just prep for what I can, the best I can. Texas or Alaska will be my final home, just not sure which one or when.

I assume that this craft would be integrated with a local shot tracker system, deployed in this environment. You may pop off a couple of shot's at the craft.... and then have the weight of TPTB come crashing into your little world.

Looks like Chicago on a Sat. night.
Burn the marsh up wind or cut the power.
The ones down here were for incoming low flying drug smugglers, Operations have moved out of our area.
