How and where are the com ports listed and assigned in 7? I need to change a port assignment for a USB cable. Rooting thru control panel doesn't show anything, and device manager is silent as well. What's bothersome is that the cable worked just fine and now does not. (Neither does the backup cable --)
I recall something either in a forum or on youtube on setting the ports for a Baofeng radio using Chirp, I'll see if I can locate it. This might help.
Mine is Kenwood and the fail has been on both the Kenwood and RTSystems programming. I'll have to try one or two of Dave's techniques, but in neither the Kenwood or RTS case does the com port selection show up. Grumble. I ain't done with this exercise, a damn bunch of electrons will not defeat me.
Removing or changing unused COM Ports from Windows. - Digi International Link has screenshots if you need to follow along. Open a Command Prompt window and type the following lines: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 start devmgmt.msc *This should automatically open the Device Manager for you. In Device Manager: click View, then Show Hidden Devices. Expand the section labeled Ports (COM & LPT) to view all COM Ports that have ever been installed on this computer. COM Ports that have been assigned but are not currently connected will have a light-grey icon. To remove an old COM Port Right-click on the COM Port in question and chose Uninstall. *You will want to reboot your PC after removing the unused COM Ports. To change COM Port assignments Right-click on the Serial Device you want to change and chose Properties. In the Properties window, click the Port Settings tab, then Advanced. In the window that opens, chose an unused COM Port from the dropdown list. *After making this change, reboot your computer to ensure that the COM Port has been properly assigned.
That is exactly the problem, com & lpt ports are not shown on control panel or any of the computer settings found under it except as follows. If I could find a listing of ports, I'd be home free. Now, having said that, when I plug the cable in, device manager does show the cable and tells me it's working correctly. But it does NOT tell me what port it's lined up to use. (Dev man doesn't find the printer, either.) ETA: Massive frustration leads me to think it's time to uninstall then reinstall both sets of software and start over. Grumble.
Boot in Safe mode & look , And also hit F2 / F something on screen boot up black to see if you have them turned on in CMOS . If all else fails . Have a tech drop into your box & repair .. EZ. Sloth
Continuing on this theme, I am having a problem with this new splurge of updates, to include a critical update from MS on windows 7. My updates are automatically installed when I go to shutdown. This happened Wednesday night as usual. However Thursday morning I could not connect with anything on the internet. I had to use the restore feature to go back a week to the 5 feb restore point to get internet access. Last night it reinstalled those updates. This morning same problem. Same solution. WTF. Any input?
Sounds like a bad update, maybe. Tac you should download and burn some linux DVDs while you still can
I got the same updates with no problems. I make it a point to not try doing anything with the machine when it goes into download and install of M$ updates. If you haven't, try downloading again after restoring and go have a cuppa while you wait it out.
