    From Forward Observer Magazine:

In Western society, we don’t really appreciate our health until it starts to fail. Our health ties directly to what we eat. In recent years we have heard of all sorts of fad diets, weight loss gimmicks and get fit quick schemes. The reality is, nutrition is a major portion of personal health and it takes planning to be successful. Looking at some of the newer eating plans can be rather daunting. Everything from low carb, Atkins, Primal, gluten free, or Paleo, is being discussed in the latest fitness magazine or health blog. Sorting through each of these programs and simplifying them into something that works for you is key to finding a successful plan and sticking to it. We are going to narrow it down to the Paleo lifestyle.

    image.

What is Paleo eating? In essence, it is mimicking what the Paleolithic humans (caveman) found to eat. Processed foods, static agriculture or the fast food nation we see today has led to unseen levels of disease, such as obesity, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and cancer. The caveman was the ultimate hunter-gatherer who took advantage of their natural environment to eat and sustain life.

Why do I call it a lifestyle and not a diet? A diet is a verb meaning ‘to restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight’. Weight loss may be part of your goal, but eating healthy unprocessed sustainable food should be included in your long-term plan. Paleo is a lifestyle that focuses on the idea of eating real, whole unprocessed foods that are locally harvested, hunted or grown. As we have evolved into a convenience-driven society, so has the type of food we eat, which has progressively gotten us away from our primal roots. To sum up the Paleo concept: you should never eat anything without first asking yourself, ‘Is this something a caveman would have had access to?’ . . . . Full article:

I like that he has the 80% rule. It makes it more appealing to those thinking of adopting this lifestyle. That which you are told you cannot have, you tend to crave. This way you can have that which you craving in moderation without the guilt all the while adjusting to your new lifestyle.

My first few month were pretty strict: maybe 95/5 but now I'm at a solid 80/20. If I'm out with people and non primal food shows up, I eat it although I try to stay 99/1 with wheat.

It's definitely not a diet and clearly a lifestyle. However, there are times in which we surely are placed in a tough situation socially, like Melbo mentioned. I have been out with folks and when it came time to eat, the last conversation I want to bring up is how they are all rotting on the inside because they are consuming toxins, chemicals and bio-engineered food genetically coded to kill insects if they eat it and laced with Round Up to promote healthy cancer genes and weakened immune systems...

Yeah. I will just eat the lettuce and the protein, sliding the GMO tomato in my napkin and setting the bun aside saying it's soggy and not mentioning how it has high fructose corn syrup like 90% of American foods do nowadays.

Eating healthy is tough work. No 'diet' is ever really tough. I'm not strictly Paleo, but I have stayed on the course of eating healthy for many, many years.

The last time I went out to eat with my parents they took me to a pretty nice burger joint. I ordered a green chili burger, sans the bun. Mom was totally embarrassed. "They'll think you're weird now," she complained. This, from the woman who wraps up leftovers in a napkin and stuffs them in her purse. I told her it was payback for all the times she embarrassed me as a kid. Seriously the waitress didn't bat an eye, probably just figured I was on Atkins. Then again that's the advantage of being female, everyone just assumes you're on some kind of diet.

In the last couple years my family has dramatically changed the way we eat. We do have a young teen living in the house and Mac-Cheese is a limited must, however, we eat a lot of Collards and other leafy greens and Rabbit meat. We have recently decided to dramatically limit Pork in our diet. We have seen several studies on the Pork industries processing habits and have come to the realization that if we want Pork we will have to raise it ourselves!
They are injecting pigs with powerful Prophylactic Antibiotics and Growth Hormones as well as the environmental damage these outlets cause. I never realized what was going into my food until I woke up and realized I was living in a health nightmare!

I don't know if there is any scientific evidence to back it up. But I've known three people over the years who've eaten lots of pork, almost on a daily basis. And now they're all dead from some form or other of digestive cancer. One of them was my father who passed away at 65, not what I would call a ripe old age. Another fellow, a co-worker, never saw 50. He practically lived on sausages for two years before he turned up with cancer of the esophagus and stomach.
None of these people were smokers.
I eat pork products occasionally, couple times a year maybe. Been that way for 25 years or more.
You're wise to back off on pork if you're eating a lot of it now, IMHO.

Most modern, packaged pork has nitrates and/or nitrites added to it. We avoid these for the above reason.
You have to find bacon that is 'naturally cured' and check the label for sodium nitrates or nitrites. Same goes with deli meat - we buy either Boars Head or Primo Taglia which is nitrite free.

I get asked all the time if I am on Atkins when ordering at a restaurant..... drives me a little nuts. I suppose it is harder for them to accept a guy watching what he eats. I have now been on the Primal way of life for over a year now and do pretty well at the 80/20 for the most part. I did take a bit of a break during the holidays and strayed quite a bit..... amazing how 10 lbs can move around really quick when you let it. Yesterday was an epic cheat with two Porters, a BLT and clam chowder..... I will behave the rest of the week ;)

We get all of our pork from a buddy who raises show pigs for the 4H/FFA kids. Whatever doesn't sell, he puts out on pasture and grows out. They get whatever they find in the pasture, discarded grocery store produce, and deer corn.

Now the bacon I get the bellies from the local asian market and cure my own, so yeah it comes from nasty CAFO hogs but it's a little better than the packaged stuff. I gave up just about everything else, but will have to pry bacon from my cold, dead fingers.

I always order bunless and although rarely asked about it, simply reply that 'Fancy men don't eat the bun'

@Altoidfishfins was this bacon and ham pork or all pork types? Reading that above really upsets me how we are slowly being poisoned and the FDA seems to be okay with it.

With my father it was pork, I don't believe he ate bacon so much. THe other fellow I don't know too much about other than he ate a lot of pork. The co-worker ate sausages daily for lunch (at least when he was at work that I know of) for about two years.

It's all about production! There is an ever increasing demand for processed food because, lets face it, we all need it. This leads industry to find a way to produce it. Nature cannot provide it on her own she has to feed the bugs too, so we create pesticides to increase the take.
There's not enough water, so they engineer drought resistant strains of vegetables, we need more Milk so they play Simon and Garfunkle and pump cows full of estrogen!
The PTB understand population is the problem so they push Abortion, Gay lifestyles contraception..... but that's not even scratching the surface of the problem.
These chemicals have to go somewhere, so where do you think they end up? A lot of the Estrogen is making its way into the drinking water!
Don't blame the pill for estrogen in drinking water -- ScienceDaily
Estrogen, nitrates, antiobiotics.... all kinds of crazy crap is being pumped into our bodies everyday, because "We want to eat, what we want to eat!"
Chances are my Grandparents or Great Grandparents never had these issues! 6 billion people was the staggering number when I was growing up, billion was not even in my vocabulary, population has increased by 15% since then and rising fast. Now their talking Global Warming and we have to get ahead of it with more GMO's, WTH?

We try to avoid anything that is raised CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations)

Animals eating and defecating in such close proximity to each other makes things like antibiotics necessary. It's a downward spiral to the quality of our meat. We buy 95% of our meats from local, organic, grass fed farms. The cattle actually walk around like they used to...

A few years ago, my wife and I went on a modified Atkins diet, that in hindsight looked a lot like the modern Marks Daily Apple Paleo diet. It was a challenge at first to stop eating all the wheat that was in our normal diet, but we stuck with it. After two months, I'd effortlessly dropped 30 pounds. Felt really good, too...

...alas, we treated the diet as just that: a diet. Which meant it was temporary in nature and not really a lifestyle change. The results you can predict; we gained back all we lost, plus put on even more weight. I keep saying I'm going to get back to this way of eating, but it is indeed hard to start and stick with. For instance, I travel a lot for my work, which means I'm eating on airplanes and in hotels and meeting buffets.

In any case, I applaud people like @melbo who have the discipline to make this change. Imho, it's the healthiest and most effective of all weight loss means around.

About twelve years ago I got tired of being Fat! At 220 and 5 ft 10inch's, I could hardly waddle my fat ass up the hill! Looked at all the diets and found them unsatisfactory..
Then I looked at body builders and how they eat.. They will put on weight then shed it for the stage.. I focused on the shedding part of the diet and thought this was doable for me..
Eat six times a day, primarily protein for five days a week and controlled carb's to complex carb's only.. And two days to cheat!! Also, strictly controlled fats to the "good" ones.. Was in the weight room five days a week and peeled off the fat, replacing it with lean muscle and shaved my weight down to 163..

Then after committing the grievous act of poaching a deer with a motorcycle, I find myself out of shape and at 175 pounds.. I started working on redeveloping those positive habits.. Back in the weight room four days a week and tuning up the diet some.. I never gave up the primary protien, however I work in an atmosphere rife with cookies and cake....
