Coast Guard Frees Grounded Cargo Ship Source: The Miami Herald Publication date: 2006-09-20 Sep. 20--The 35,000-ton freighter that ran aground off the coast of Fort Lauderdale last week is now free, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed this morning. Just before daybreak today, Coast Guard officials refloated the Clipper Lasco and moved it away from the coral reef that held it captive. This morning's efforts ended the six-day struggle to free the vessel. "There were some delays, but that is to be expected in an operation like this," said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dana Warr. "The bottom line is that the ship has been moved and we had no injuries." The Clipper Lasco, a 645-foot vessel registered in the Bahamas, was en route to Port Everglades when it ran aground on Thursday afternoon. On board: more than 30,000 tons of bauxite, an aluminum ore. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. That night, the vessel's owner proposed removing nearly 2,000 tons of cargo from the ship to make it float. The Coast Guard approved the plan on Saturday night and got to work the following morning, moving a barge and a crane into the area, Warr said. There were some snafus. Problems with the crane stymied operations for a short while on Monday afternoon. But by late Tuesday night, the necessary weight had been removed. As of this morning, the Clipper Lasco has dropped anchor in deeper waters. Coast Guard officials say they will inspect the hull for damage today, and if all is well, allow the vessel into Port Everglades this afternoon. State officials plan to dive in the area over the next few days to assess damage to the reef.
