i was kicking around ideas a couple weeks ago and came up with an interesting top ten list for going off grid:

    1. why not
    2. fewer material trappings.
    3. get back in touch with pioneer ways.
    4. simple way of life.
    5. dependant upon self.
    6. more calming/ relaxing.
    7. do not have to worry about keeping up with the jonse's.
    8. doesn't harm the environment.
    9. discover talents you didn't know you had.
    10. skills can be passed from one generation to the next.

    1. Less access to ladies if you're single. (unless you have horses)
    2. Homebrew beer/wine is 'ok' but not a substitute for pro-brew.
    3. Most not capable of creating bio-fuel or hyrdogen in abundance.
    4. Most not capable of making their own ammo for long periods of time.
    5. Most not enough acreage/structures for milk & beef cows + chickens + pigs + goats.

    Just an opinion.

Hm. I guess I don't see the validity of #1 as a reason to go off. The rest, well, no need to go off grid to make them all work as well, plus the grid is your backup if you do --

ditch witch I do stupid crap, so you don't have to

I think MG's reasons were all the Why Not reasons.
I recall towards the end of 1999 a lot of people pulling up stakes and heading out to 5 acre "farms" in southern Arizona. I always wondered how that turned out.

The REAL reason to go Off-Grid, is to get far enough out, that folks leave you alone, and you can live in the Natural Quiet.... The rest is just doing what is required just to live that far out.... There is really No Other Reason to be completely Off-Grid....

Our goal is to set up the cabin semi- off. We can "steal" power/water from our house farther up the hill.

@ditchwitch your post made me laugh..
    And the answer is...
Not well :) lots of junk lying in the desert these days

And as to living off grid....

tbh... No one is truly off grid unless you are willing to go back to primitive living Conditions. I'm staying om the grid as long as I can and have multiple back up systems In play.

Idk what this trend for 'back to nature' is all about but I'm tired of listening to it. (mini rant skip if it offends you)

I was raised on a ranch with no electricity... Winters are cold, you get children Bains on your hands if you aren't careful, summer the only Time you get cool is if you have 5 min late in the evening to go skinny Dipping in the dark cuz during daylight you are working in the dirt and wind.

At the end of winter beans/ cornbread or chili beans for weeks on end... Because you are Conserving so you can plant spring crops and you just flat out run low on food at the end .... And conserving coins to pay your taxes

All water has to be hauled to the house from the windmill. Including the garden... Dishes sometimes get wasted in cold water as the winter progresses you run out of wood and cow chips.

Now you can say that my parents didn't plan well or it wouldn't have been like that but they kept us and 3-4 other families alive in some really bad grass years. Most Farmers and ranchers who don't go Into debt only get Income once a year. So cash management is essential

I look at my life now and I do not regret how I grew up I sure as he'll don't want to go back to that.

So when people talk about living get off the grid idk whether to laugh or smack them for their ignorance.

Solar you say.. Who in the he'll manufactured your solar panels... Those weren't manufacturers off grid.

Even growing up we didn't truly live off grid because someone manufactured all the piping we used for water tanks and the metal used in windmills.... And vehicles we drove

Living off grid is not easy even if you have a diesel gwnerator or solar power..? You still have to manage your power usage.

So off grid... Really.? Get a life and stop being a stupid romantic fool

Give me electricity or give me death!

    (rant contained)

I am planning my life to one day "live off the grid". I imagine the term off the grid means different things to different people. I am neither romantic or a fool.

edit: I think that pulling up stakes and living off the land on 5 acres in Arizona would very hard, setting oneself up for failure. In many places in the southwest when talking grazing cattle you don't measure the amount of head per acre but the numbers of acres required to graze one animal. Ranches in catron county NM I believe it is one cow per 250 or so acres, there just is not that much grass to go around. When I go "off the grid" it will be in comfort, thus saving money to one day make it happen. I plan on living simple but money is still needed, have been working on my place for several years now and it is nowhere close to done. But one day I see myself sitting under the cottonwoods and elms I have planted, enjoying the shade and life in general

BT is off grid , My emergency cabins , boat (away from dock) are off grid , any supplied water/gas/power/sewer/ bill from-for is connected & NOT OFF GRID .

I want to be solar & live within my means , harder than you think with grid power .
But each to there own preconception , I was awoken six years ago .

Dudleyville/ Winkleman AZ. Largest water table in the state. You could grow all the food you need. Weather is good about ten degrees cooler than Tucson. And the cotton woods are all over the place. Actually a very good location for solar, not enough wind. There is plenty of mesquite wood. Actually a good place to retire to. Been here 30 plus years now. Best place in the state.

It's my place. Been working on it for about twelve years now. 55 acres. there are several places in the area 1 1/4 acres to about five acre lots most have septic and wells on them. might have o built a four foot foundation if you get closer to the San Pedro river. If it floods it usually can have 18" across the areas doesn't happen often. some places are out of the flood plain like this one. I've never had a flooding issue. It's a quiet place for the most part.

Being here most of my 53 years, the best area is around the Winkleman/ Mammoth area. The primary thing one needs is water in this state. There are a lot of sites 1 1/4 acre with wells and septic system. That and about 4,000 watts of solar pnls, and a battery bank to run the inverter. I would say it is possible. You could pump water all day long for free, and grow a big garden.

those places need to have a Row Boat tied up the the Hitch'en Post in the Front Yard..... When folks ask about the Boat, tell them, "Just wait till the Rainy Season, and you will know."

Normally one can walk out of this area if it floods, most I ever seen in 40 years is about 20". Just get some distance from the San Pedro river and you don't have any issues, Or build for it. I've only seen it flood three time in those 40 years.

Yep you ate in a 500 yr flood plain as long as you have tall foundations you are probably ok. Did that B&B in Arizona sell yet

B&B in Arizona sell yet? don't know what it is. There is a lot of government agencies. trying to acquire this area currently. State fish and game. Federal wildlife. Nature conservatory. etc. This is where most of the water in this state is.
