In light of recent school shootings should teachers and or school officials be allowed to carry concealed wepons? My wife is a teacher in a school which is located in a more rural setting. When I asked her that question she replied, "No way I would want to carry a gun." Then I mentioned how about your principal? (who happens to be a gay guy.) She then said, "I would rather I was armed then!" There are no police or security guards at the schools in our town. No one with a concealed wepon permit is allowed to carry a gun into a school in Ohio. Should teachers be allowed?
Going by what I have seen around here and the quality of public school teachers I would say no. I don't trust them to teach let alone carry a firearm. If you want armed teachers, homeschool; that's what we did.
I have mixed emotions. My wife is a teacher, and I would say yes to arming her and some other teachers that we know, but no to some others. I have heard that some of the teachers in Israel are armed. If they were armed, they would also have to be well trained.
Do you remember the principal in (Georgia??)? I don't remember where it was, but it was a kid who killed his mother then came to school and shot some kids and was going to where he worked and was going to shoot some more people. The Principal was a hunter and had a rifle in his truck. He got it and stopped the kid and held him until police arrived. I think that anyone who has a CCW permit should be able to carry anywhere they want to. But on the other hand I would urge everyone to get your kids out of the Gov. indoctrination camps (public school system).
1997 in Pearl Mississippi a 16 year old kid killed two and wounded seven more. The principal ran half a mile away to where his pickup was parked, got his handgun out, and stopped the shooter who was in his car and headed to the elementary school. I know if I were still in the classroom ( I taught vocational building trades for a while...but I'm feeling much better now, thanks ), I'd have one squirreled away someplace where I could access it quickly, but it was hidden.....and the law be damned. And if I were a principal, same thing. I'd take my chances with jury nulification over a date with the coroner. But that aside, the law SHOULD allow it......not require, but allow. Anybody ever heard of a whack case walking into a rod and gun club, or an NRA meeting or such and shooting the place up ?? Nope....they always pick the 'gun free zones' like schools, the post office, the idiot employers who have these adament no gun policies.... WELL GUESS WHY !!!! IF there was a chance that 10% of the teachers were armed, and the nutcase would get dropped in his tracks before getting to carry out his 'mission', they might just think twice about it....and worse case, casualties might go down. IF the Amish school marm had whipped out a .45 and cut that bastard down about the time he was lining those kids up, that would have been a win-win IMHO.
Homeschool. The teacher is armed. The "school house" is secure. We indoctronate our children with the information of our choosing. Moral ambiguity or moral relativity is not practiced in our home. Teachers should have the choice to be armed, but should have intensive training.
Reminds me of the first time I went to the Wanamacher Gun Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The largest show in the world, nearly 4000 tables. The aisles were so crowded it was shoulder to shoulder. I was looking over a table when a young couple moved in near me trying to get a break from the sea of humanity. I overheard the woman tell her boyfriend/husband " I can't believe how polite everyone is. Everybody says excuse me, sorry, pardon me." The boyfriend/husband replied " Hell yeah! Everybodys carrying a gun!" An armed society is a polite society. Pass liberal concealed carry in Florida and what happens? Crime goes down, except on tourists. The only group who criminals can be sure aren't armed. ( Bumper sticker seen in Florida " If you can't shoot them, why do they call it tourist season?") Create "Gun free zones" around schools and what happens? Wolves go to where the sheep are. Where is the one place in Isreal you never hear of terrorists attacking? School rooms. Why? All the teachers carry Uzi's! I agree that it should not be mandatory. But, just like airline pilots, it should be allowed for anyone who wants to.
As long as they are properly trained, I would say yes. The min. required CCW class in our state isn't adequate enough IMO, range time and familiarity with handguns should part of the course for everybody that's gonna carry concealed.
+1 what Clyde and 155 did(homeschool). There shouldn't be any armed teachers because there shouldn't be any public schools. They're all failing no matter how much money we throw at them. They can't keep kids safe because the gov't can never keep anyone or anything safe. Shame on us for even thinking that it can. Nor can they teach basic skills either. I'm sure there'll be more meetings , more feel good committes and more taxes collected for "the children" and the prisons/schools will be even more "secure" with even more cameras and socialist indoctrination programs to go with all the new measures. Then they'll shoot them where there's no security.......on the school buses!!! Then they'll need armored cars to pick up your kids and armed escorts to guard the school buses. Guards to guard the guards after they beat up or molest your kids while they're guarding them!! (or sell them drugs!) Of course now with all the new measures your children will be easy pickens for all the sexual predator teachers that are out there now days. And the schools will be so secure....that you won't be able to get to your kids when they're getting raped!! See.....now don't you feel safer? We get the gov't we deserve.....facism/socialism.....when we fail to take care of ourselves and expect gov't to do it all! Our founding fathers would be laughing in our faces for the path we've gone down!
I want very much to say "yes" but, teachers today (most not all) would not know the first thing about how to handle a firearm. If properly trained and themselves legally allowed to own guns, I'd say yes. Pretty much like when I was in school, even some of the older teen boys had firearms in the back window of their pickup trucks parked in the school parking lot... Aren't those days gone for good? I have to agree that a well armed society is a polite society. Today, if I had children of school age, I'd try my best to see them home schooled or at least go to private school. I can still see the damage the public school system did to my son.
Righthand, I want children to have the same. I remember the day public education became public indoctrination. But in the matter of school officials (public) carrying firearms , I do not think that is appropriate. 1. Many public school teachers have a liberal arts major and are planning a career as a government paid teacher (read democrat). 2. I still remember some of the teachers I had that were likely to carry a firearm and this scares me. 3. I would not want a teacher to carry the emotional burden of having to decide when to shoot a child, regardles of training and statistically, the likely-hood of armed confrontation at a school is still pretty low. 4. I am glad my kids are grown.

The guy walked into a Texas gun shop (after concealed carry was passed no less), pulled out a gun and fired it into the cieling as he shouted something about 'Freeze, this is a sti....', he had a couple dozen new holes before he could finish his sentence. As I recall he won the Darwin award that year, I know he was at least nominated since thats where I heard about it. Now as far as 'should teachers be allowed to carry at school', I think '...shall not be infringed.' pretty well covers that. Its kind of sad that even on a board like this we have to ask if it should be 'allowed' for a person to exercise a right that our founding fathers acknowledged came from a power high than any man or government and given that standard is about like asking if they should be 'allowed' to breath on school grounds. Granted I would HOPE that they would be responsible enouph to be well trained and practiced with it and know how and when to use it and not to but it is the right of every human being, not just American we just happen to be in a place were its closer to recognized, to keep and bare arms in order to protect them selves.
Good point MM! It's sad how easy we fall into the rhetoric of asking whether or not our rights should be "allowed". We are being conditioned and don't even realize it. Can you say Pavlovs' dog.
