I'm trying to do a system restore and I'm not an XP pro.

I'll post the blue screen warning.

Not sure what that error is. IIRC, in Sys restore, Don't you just pick a day on the little calendar that pops up fom a known good system?

I've only used it once and had to reformat and reload XP anyway.

    Sorry

throw the computer away and start over. That has worked best for me. See if they can pull your important data off the computer.

    100% foolproof ;)

or maybe it's an Operator Error?

    Thanks (?!;)), guys!

Throw it away?? You're joking, right?!?! Is XP really that bad??

You know; if it were me at the controls; I'd chalk it up to operator error, however, I'm asking for another. They're looking for the XP disk now.

I've run system restore, successfully (too many times to count) but not on XP (which is why I asked).

No, XP is not so bad. I'm guessing here about that error message, but if there is no set restore point in memory, you'll get some sort of error window/message. Until I set the first one, poking around and experimenting brought me something similar to that. At the time, I had XP for a matter of days, and had no clue what I was doing.;)

they need to enter the numbers from the XP CD to move on.

IF they hadn't started packing....and IF they knew what box the CD was in....they MIGHT be able to do that.

IF they had already announced on here they were moving...but they haven't done that yet.

    Or so I hear.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?u...
    http://www.eventid.net/events.asp

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

    Is your Bios updated?

These errors may be caused by defective physical memory or incompatible software which caused a hardware driver or service request for data that was not in memory.
If the error occurred after installing a device driver or application, try using Safe Mode and removing the driver or program.

    Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?). LAST KNOWN etc

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

    Nope...not really..

but I can get online...We need to figure out what that program that attached itself to Windows Media is...
That is what caused the screw ups..

I can only operate in safe mode right now...and it is a PITA....or else we're back to BSOD.....

This is tiring..I need a break!

    Thanks Quigs...You rock!

Will have questions later..when I can think again...

What led to the system restore in the first place?

Do you mean "as an idea"? If so; It might have been my (not so?) bright idea. I use it all the time when something goes wrong and I'm not sure what I/new program did.

    Tracy,

Go into Safe Mode with networking. If you have Adaware 6 by Lavasoft on your computer, then run it. If not, then download the free version at www.lavasoft.com

Delete all the items that it recognizes as malware, viruses, etc. Then run it again.

When was the last time you did a disk defrag? You might want to run it while in Safe Mode as well.

Do you have an up-to-date antivirus program on the pc? If so, run it and delete anything it finds as bad.

Let me know what you get from this stuff first, then we can move on to the next step.

I'm sure there'll be more questions tomorrow... Tonight's [boozingbuddies]

BTW-I run adaware and not XP - I was asking for a friend.
