Hello everyone,Thought i'd start right in with a rant( bad form?)
I'm a noob here and plan to catch up on the archgives as I go along; However, I am kinda curious
Re: the philosophies of this particular forum( " youse guys") I recently wandered through another board where it seemed, though calling themselves "survivalist", they were more LOOKING for a gun fight to show off their $10,000 mbr's, than living to protect and provide for family/team members.
I dunno bout you guys but my personal philosophy is alot closer to mother earth news and low profile homesteading vs Soldier of fortune...reading the first back to basics thread here is what caused me to register here rather than that "Other" place...What's the vote? My .308 is badder than your.223oohrah!? Or:
I'd rather have a kerosene heater and fuel in a wisconsin winter than over a125 loaded mags.
Don't get me wrong I like hard core black plastic classIII firearms as much as the next guy, I'm just careful they maintain their utility and perspective( So I don't get caught up in the "gun thing"again:rolleyes:)
Rant completed (here goes nothing)... out.;)
discuss amongst yourselves, feel free to tell me to get bent, gtfoh and don't bother coming back....
On third reading I'm not really leaving room for an opposing opinion am I? Bad Tango no biscuit.

What do you have in your BOB's (Bug Out Bags), Tango...

Along with the water, food and creature comforts we have a Ruger SP101 .357 MAG with 200 rounds in each backpack. Ric

I think you will find that most of us share your philosophy although we are all armed. When you get around to reading the archives, you'll find a lot of discussion about preparations and strategies for survival. We look forward to your input.

T3, we are a light hearted mix of back to the basics, firearms, and current events.
We will discuss anything except $10,000 mbrs, that ain't us. Our philosophy would be to spend $800 of that on a AR or AK, a few hundred on ammo, and the rest food and medical supplies.

    Hey T3.

Welcome to the board. I think the majority here share your thoughts. SOme of my "hobby Gun Collecting" leads me to the more extreme and exotic. But, I'd never toss those weapons out in a discussion about MBRs or group standard gear.

Plain and simple KISS seems to be the prevailing philosophy at the Monkey.

    Glad to meet you

While I do own whizbang evil black rifles, I'm likely going to get rid of them.

My lowly WW2-era Russian M38 Mosin-Nagant is the one I seem to grab every time I head out in the woods. It's plenty good enough to defend against looters, but more importantly it will put any kind of meat on the table that can be found in my neck of the woods. And yes, I have looked down the sights of this rifle at a bear that got too close and I did not blink.

But I haven't bought any new guns in over a year. I'm far more likely to need food or water or heat or...

Welcome Tango. Sounds like you'll fit in here pretty well actually. My focus is not the combat side of things but with that said....... I do SOOOOO love to play with my guns :)

Follow the MELBO (and other) introductory method to "preparedness" survival is sometimes a misnomer as I would classify the majority on this board as practical preppers with a few toys thrown in.

    3 minutes without O2
    3 hours without shelter
    3 days without water
    3 weeks without food
    3 months....(permanent shelter)
1 year.....(Permanent homestead or place to go)
2 years.....(You better be a farmer if it lasts this long or have moved and lived the life prioer to the beginning of the 3 hours without shelter)

Start with are an prepare for each level. Over time you will be preppared. As for me: AR15s, M1As, .22 LR, and .45 Handguns are my standards of weapons. Going through process of...do I get 2 ARs or 1 M1A dilemma for the same price. I am planning with a few friends and they are AR guys, I really like shooting the M1A as it feels like a weapon. Odds are I will slowly collect both!

I look at that AR collecting dust in my closet and wonder how many pounds of beans, flour, sugar, rice, pasta, etc. I can store up for the same price.

Then I head out in the woods with my $100 Mosin Nagant.

Please don't take offense at my previous post...

I'm not currently overflowing with fancy stuff but I'm plannin for what's currently in the closet( only ) 30-30,12ga/.38/22lr.I could use a new S&W #520 .357
( I have become a revolver guy ,as my left hand is less than 100% strength, Though I loved my issue 1911.45, Since experiencing a moderate stroke,I had trouble cycling the slidereliably 100% of the time without slipping.).
I had a brand spanky new AR around '78 or so $400 at the sporting goods store, it got swapped for a 6" mdl 29 somewhere along the way( that I couldn't afford to feed)...

I'm debateing picking up a mini-14 or coughing up real (to me) cash for a sexy .308 700 heavy barrel and optics. Then again I may skip the mini and get a low-key smle. We are planning on staying 'til evicted by the bad guys.. But I see the necessity of bob's for our vehicles.

I don't know, I like to buy guns and can rationalize most any combination...As I am becoming more focused on repelling boarders(fixed point defense) of our suburban home. I am starting to see the utility of a .223 semi to go along with the 870/30-30 carbine and .38.:)

We all have our different thoughts on weapons and rightfully so. We all live in different areas of the CONUS and each area has it's own quirks as well as issues to be dealt with. The only thing I can say is that if TSHTF you will get more game with a 22. than the 870.
The 10K gun question is one you won't see here. Mainly because while we do have the occasional fruit roll thru here everyone is pretty much well grounded and can think of alot more viable uses for 10K than putting it on one weapon.
Glad to have you here and I'm sure that as you go thru the archives you will find alot of your questions answered.

    Take care Be safe Poacher.

I think for that kind of money an assault/tactical wheelbarrow is in order.

Where? Where? Who's selling them? I want an T.A.W. and I want it yesterday. [LMAO] Though I remember hearing somewhere that the manufacturer of such fine SHTF armaments is cooling his heels at the crossbar motel. :D

First off, welcome aboard. As far as the philosophy here, I would say that a few collect some of what most of us would consider high end stuff for the fun of haveing them and playing with them but pretty much all of the folks here look at more of the big picture and covering the basics first. How that is done dose vary quite a bit based on who and where it is from simple homestead living to full BO plans with alternate prestocked locations and so on to a lot of other options.

While none here realy tend to plan on trying to run a war if SHTF I think most here do include in their preps for the idea that they may need weapons and ammo sufficient to defend themselves/family/group/property in a TEOTWAWKI situation, but most prep first and more heavily for the more common things like bad weather, power outages and so on then just keep going to try to cover all the bases includeing the less likely or less comon.
