It is not that hard to hand wash.

Well if you have kids then washing takes a lot of time. If just washing for yourself hand washing is easy. ... but multiply for a family you get the picture.

Interesting set up @reinkefj. Thanks for sharing. I always figured I would be doing washing using the below:

    • Two 5-gallon buckets with one lid
    • Toilet plunger (make sure it’s a newly purchased one)
    • Liquid detergent (optional: stain stick)
    • Vinegar
    • Rope or clothesline

It looks like an economical low tech device that reduces some of the hard labour of hand washing, and enables the laundry person to do other tasks concurrently. No electricity required....add a dynamo and capacitor and you could probably charge a cell phone while doing the family dobhi wallah work.

The only change here will be hanging the clothesline back up...washer and well are on solar ;) So simple, even a monkey can do it:whistle:

This is the setup I am going to build one cold day this winter, using plastic tubs. I remember seeing my grandmother literally washing clothes in a black cast-iron wash tub over a wood fire with lye soap. Hardest working woman I have ever known. This is a vast improvement over that.

As a side note, I was in that slum in Lima about five years ago. The poverty was absolutely staggering.

Not to try and raise the stakes, but if you have never been in Haiti... you have not seen the worst of the poor, this world has to offer.

I have watched as one bathed in a creek.. a little farther down a woman tries to wash her clothes and further down a kid pulls water for the family to drink out of. This is a cruel world we live in, that of which here stateside, many have no idea. You work for your family and do the best you can...you prepare for the worst..... as there are many out there struggling to survive, right now.

You are correct, for a large part of this world's population SHTF would be a non event, it started at birth for them.

Well, I like to think many of our well traveled monkeys have a pretty good idea.

Pick your war zone -entire families live in squalor and children run around unchecked. People defecating and urinating anywhere they can, sewage in every street, and local water sources polluted and contaminated.
