My son is a gamer. He wants a computer for Christmas. I'd personally rather spend money for things that get him outside, but kids need computers for school these days as well.
I need input on a system that could be used for gaming and work that's relatively affordable. I'm incompetent when it comes to these things, as I know just enough to get me into trouble.
Thanks in advance. I know lots of you know what I'm looking for, even when I don't. RRL

Best I can tell you is avoid Wal-Mart computers and Toshiba. A guy who comes to my Chat got royally screwed by Wal-Mart. And my laptop from there is junk. I wish I could be of more help to you.

Laptop or desk top. A laptop will burn through batteries fairly fast when gaming where as, days can be wasted gaming on a desk top.

Haven't picked yet, just weighing the options. Think I'd prefer a desktop though. It won't disappear.

Don't write off Toshiba. Just don't buy it from Wally World, get it from a reputable knowledgeable dealer.

Do you have a desk top now? Gaming computers are super expensive. @sec_monkey was able to assist me in putting something in our existing desktop that sped things up. My gamer was happy.

Yes, but our pc is on its last legs. I figure it'll be easier just to get him his own system. I just haven't messed with them for so long, I'm out of the loop. The kid definitely isn't getting a thousand dollar or more system.

    Excellent.
    Main things for gamers:
    Best Video Card
    Best Processor
    16gb+ Ram
Solid State HD for OS/Games - regular HD for storage.
    Dual Monitors

    In that order.

Optional if he is a serious gamer:
    Macro Mouse
Razer Naga Gaming Mouse - Ergonomic MMO Gaming Mouse - Razer Asia Pacific

Quality USB headset for coms with his guild/group.

The last time I gamed on a PC, was in 2000, playing Diablo. All we needed then we're good graphics cards. Thanks all!

@Mindgrinder those mouses are so expensive. I question razer products. I spend $100 on a head set that lasted less then a year. My gamer wanted the razer keyboard and mouse but has jumped over to gaming or playing on Xbox live.

Are you talking to me? To bad you don't have a console because I would meet you in MW3 Nuke town & woop your butt.

That will work just fine and the price is right.

If you prefer new, wait for the xmas sales then buy a machine with as much CPU and RAM as you can afford. Then you might consider updating the video card with something a bit more hefty...something your son should be able to do after you get him the machine. IMO, computers, like motor vehicles, bicycles, etc. are things that kids need to be able to do basic maintenance and upgrades on.

    What is you budget first?

Second I agree with Mindgrinder on the Alienware(now Dell) As I have a Aleinware Aurora that when O left my last Job they gave me as a "parting gift".

They are solid machines, have liquid cooling and great Graphic card options

Get the right machine amd you can upgrade later to this
