Well I guess I will start out by saying hello.
I am a 24yr female that is just starting out. I purchased 8 acres this year and have been getting it ready to start my off grid farm.
I am a Union Carpenter and purchased my land on contract for deed for a good deal. Sadly I purchased late in the year so I will not be able to start building till next year and the city has made getting anything done next to impossible.
Anyways I am looking to do a mix of prepper/off grid. I am going to get my first set of cows next year and my chickens.
I also want my farm to run off a mix of solar and wind but I need to do more research before I delve into that mess.

Glad you could make it. Good people and good info here.
Grab a branch and hang around.
Looks like you're already off to a good start with your property purchase and your carpenter skills (I'm probably the world's worst carpenter..but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night).

Welcome. I've spent a lot of time in MN; fall-winter, winter-winter, spring-winter and summer. Most familiar from time with various Cargill plants and MCAD in Mpls. And, a never forgotten day in New Ulm at the brewery.

Welcome to the monkey @cschattner. Sounds like you have a great plan and a true schedule. I am interested in what style chicken coop you are planning. Is that your barn in your avatar?

I smiled when I saw this-
That is such a true statement. Rules and regulations certain make things more difficult and sit around and waiting for inspections.... ugh!

PS- you said wind, are you planning windmills?

Yes I am looking into a windmill for at least the well and maybe to supplement the house.
Sadly no that is not my barn. I took that pic in Wisconsin of an abandoned barn and house that I drove past daily. The property was owned by a cattle farmer that bought the property and let two houses just rot, it was depressing to watch.

I have not picked a coop out yet. I am thinking a mobile one so the city can't bitch since they won't let me build even a shed until my house gets built.

Welcome to the Monkey.... Ask the City if you can build a "Garage".... Many times the actual Name, and use, of the Building, can make a big difference, in what they will allow....

They said no to that too. It is considered an excesory structure.

    And what DO they allow?

They allow slavery. Pay your taxes like a good slave, or else.
She can't build anything until the main house itself is permitted, built, inspected, taxed, sniffed, prodded and poked. Then one can have a shed, with the right tax money and the right permits. But, if you dare break the rules --you get taxed some more with fines. That'll teach ya!

    And welcome @cschattner

Ya I am fairly in a hole with this city. I made the mistake of purchasing land that is not far enough away from the twin cities. In the 2 months I have been here I have been harassed non-stop every week by the city, sheriff and my neighbors over petty BS.
I however am very stubborn and will not give in to their pettiness. I have lived 2 months with no electricity, running water in a tent. I have more invested in this then they do in their house. They just handed over a ton of money and got what they wanted. I am actually working for this and I will come out with more blood, sweat and tears invested then they have put into anything in their lives.
All my neighbors make 500k+ a year while I am in the lower 30k so I stand out a bit LOL.

I think you have found a niche at SM because the members are, for the most part, people who don't necessarily need to play within the rules. We're somewhat like the pioneers of our heritage in that we have a pretty clear image of how we want to live and are willing to do what it takes to accomplish it.
