I've been meaning to find a good forum for bushcraft, survival, hunting, outdoors, and guns...I currently run a youtube channel which I share my outdoors adventures called Live The Adventure. Looks like a good forum. I live in Utah, so I also spend time on the UtahWildlife.net forum which is geared more to Utah hunting. Looks like a fun community. I don't consider myself a pro at anything I do on my adventures into the woods, but I love to learn and share experiences.

Hello @phorisc and welcome to the monkey. I checked out your youtube channel. You have lots of videos on there, I watched part of your winter camping adventure. I once went camping in Acadia during the winter. It was super cold and I made the mistake of not layering enough. It was real hard to warm up once I got to that really cold point. Hot soup and walking was such a chore. Learned a huge lesson. Camping in the winter is not easy unless you are experienced.

    Happy you found us.

@Motomom34, First time I went winter camping(I was deer hunting as well) I had a bad sleeping bag that I barely fit in and it was only a rating of around 32F. I wasn't layered and I was wearing cotton pants and a cotton tshirt...That was one of the coldest nights...I woke up multiple times during the night with cold hands and feet. I ended up throwing a jacket over my feet to help insulate what little the sleeping bag was able to warm me. It was a really fun experience winter camping but the cold sucked...it did however manage to teach me a valuable lesson about being prepared when winter camping and having the right gear(and clothes!) for the situation. I'd say one of my most valuable piece of gear when I winter camp is my sleeping bag...and for that reason i have a -40F/C bag...If all else goes to crap I can bundle into my big sleeping bag and warm up :) I also avoid cotton for the most part, there are a few exceptions...but anyhow yeah, not the easiest to go winter camping...

Welcome to the forum! I am happy to see more folks taking an active role and posting. We are looking forward to your adventures, @phorisc --feel free to post your findings in a write-up and share a link to your videos, too if you prefer. We are always happy to see members post a gear review, too. It doesn't have to be professional, just add some pictures and tell us what you think.

About the sleeping bag, I agree it's very important in colder climates to have a quality sleeping bag. I did begin to alter my sleeping arrangement after I learned to set a fire properly. Way up north, it can save your life. Here's how Ray Mears explains the idea (at about 6:30 in the video):

one of these days I need to put the long fire into practice, i've read about it and watched youtube videos about it and never actually tried having it warm me through the night while I sleep.
