My neighbor comes over every so often and has me surf the net for him. He came over the other day and started asking me about AK's. I was honest with him and told him I know nothing about them. I helped him surf around for them and started doing a bit of research on the subject. We found a thread on AR15.com that said to buy an import and that the IO's are crap, border lining on dangerous. We surfed around for a while and found this

    Hungarian AMD 63 AK-47 Type 7.62x39 Semi-Auto Hi-Cap Rifle w/ Phoenix Technology Stock - Long Guns

that was in his rather low budget. I don't know enough to help him, but I told him I would ask here. I know there are several experts here, so what are your opinions on this particular weapon? He is local enough that this would be an ftf purchase. Anything he should look for once he has it in his hand before he forks over cash for it?

Thanks for any help for my neighbor.

The C39v2 has RAVE reviews from everyone I have seen. Plus it' American. I've only had the opportunity to lay hands on them, but I like them, and everything I have heard.

At that price I'd be looking at an AR, but for an AK platform Century Arms is making a US built AK that is supposed to be the schniz.

My biggest complaint with the AK platform is crappy ergonomics, a safety that can be heard for a mile, no good way to mount a scope, no bolt hold open on last round (can be added). I definitely like the cheap ammo, though it's corrosive and not easily reloaded, and naturally rugged and reliable as hell.

As long as the bore is good, the rest of the AK can be easily fixed and preened proper relatively easily due to the high tolerances. I once picked up a Rom really cheap because it had a bent gas piston and it wasn't cycling properly. Easy fix. Always check the welds and rivets of the receiver. Chances are, it's good to go, but that's what I would focus on checking. Only the elitists and collectors care about the make and model. For me, an AK 7.62x39 requires a good bore and the receiver is made well. The rest is easy street to make high speed.

Or build your own from a parts kit. There are a number of sources easily found on line. I don't know much about that particular rifle, but the price is right if IT is. One thing I don't like about that FEG variant is the gas tube completely exposed. You WILL burn yourself on it.

There is essentially no way to evaluate condition without hands on inspections. You will like a milled receiver and a good bore, the rest is simple beyond belief as Brokor notes.

Roger on the exposed gas tube. For a complete gun, the M&M M10 762 is pretty much functionally equivalent but has a quad picatinny handguard rail, a windage adjustable rear sight, a better flash suppressor and a side rail mount.

If one builds from a kit, make sure it's the correct kit for the receiver. As a rule milled receivers will nor take a kit that was from a stamped receiver. The milled is the way to go, but the receiver flats/kits are cheaper and if time is taken will produce good results-for a peasant plow:D

As has been mentioned; the exposed gas tube is a no go.
Most AKs are decent firearms; MOT (minute of torso) accurate, slow to mag swap, and the trigger isn't the best. AKs are reliable; so are ARs and the rest Military weapons. Most lack the bolt stays back when the mag is empty feature which can be detrimental to those who don't keep a round count in their head

Yes, at least in my mind it would be a much better choice than the hunky. And yes, one can find forearms that cover the gas tube, or at least most of the tube, but then you have to add a few bucks and some time to the purchase. Go to the Tapco site (or any of the major suppliers, like Midway) for an idea of the costs.

But again, there is no substitute for hands on inspections before plunking down the bux. Century has a wounded reputation in the past, but I'll admit I'm not current with that.

Nice looking, the mag release is more of a paddle shape and looks easier to use than the usual ones. When it comes to mag changes, there is no way will it keep up with an AR.

I have a FEG folder, same deal and I don't think so. Without the forend if you shoot it a lot, you have to carry it. Potentially, slinging it would burn you.

The upper part of a Russian AK's forend is stained with iodine which gives it a reddish color.
