Rice is Nice (You Can't Beat the Heat!)

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

A cloth bag of ordinary white rice makes an excellent hot-pad.

We make them in all sizes from 5-lb bags that will keep you warm outdoors for an amazing length of time to smaller flat pads with rice-filled channels like roll & tuck upholstery for the face.

My sweetie's latest is a drape vest that puts a layer of warm on the back or front as needed.

These are great for a sore back, especially in cold weather when ligaments get short and muscles get tight.

Almost any cloth will do--we prefer fuzzy cloth, but make them out of anything from velour to denim.

Rice bags can be heated in the microwave, by the fire, or in the oven, or in a covered pot on a stove top. Just keep the heat low so nothing gets too hot to touch or bursts into flame.

If you get them a little too hot for comfort, just add a few layers of towel.

Take a few to a hunting blind, or to a flea-market table in the winter, or to bed on a cold night. Better than a hot brick on cold tootsies.

The first few times you warm them up, they'll smell like they cooking rice and provide moist heat. That's just until they get fully dry.

Make a few and play with them--you'll get hooked on how nice they feel.

Good one, @UncleMorgan. Tried cherry pits too. They also work well and are a little lighter for the bulk than rice. They also retain heat well. If I recall, wifee also made bags with flax seeds. But they are much heavier than the cherry.

I guess we're kinda lazy here, we just use a tube sock filled with rice. Heated in the microwave, it works good for a sore neck and sometimes helps with headaches.

Hi, @Tully Mars, How long would you heat it in the microwave? I hope this isn't a dumb question. I want to put one in our bags and have some on the ready. Great idea. Thank you

What an excellent idea @UncleMorgan. Have you ever tried this for cold? Like keeping a bag in the freezer? We currently have a bag of peas and carrots serving as a cold compress but I like just having something we could freeze or heat.

I would suggest one minute at a time. You might want to flip it and zap it again if you need it much hotter.

Never tried freezing rice. I suspect, but don't know, that the peas and carrots will work better because of its moisture content.

@Motomom34: Never tried it for the chill factor. Got a small bag in the freezer right now to see.

@Ganado: I'm kind of camera-challenged at the moment. Think of the kind of vest a crossing guard wears for visibility, and give it vertical tubular channels about an inch and a half wide by stitching lines and then filling the space between them with rice. Once filled, the vest sews shut at the bottom hem, and it's good to go. Ours have about 2-3 lbs of rice, and we nuke them for about three minutes. They look about like this but with slightly wider shoulder straps:
    VEST1.

And you can cook it up afterwards.

Yup @Hanzo that is exactly what we do. One minute and check. Newer rice takes a bit longer to get to temp than older rice does.

LOL, I see your point, but next time you have a body part that aches, try some hot rice on the outside..;)

English peas work the best for us, and we keep a few bags in the freezer just for ice packs. They don't last as long as some chemical ice packs do, but with having a few to rotate it works out well-for us at least.

on a serious note, what do you put the alcohol and water in for compresses? plastic bags? hot water bottle? It sounds interesting so I'm just wondering.
