So you think Vets don't help Vets?
Then think again, not only do Vets help their fellow Vets but they also help active and reserve personnel.

Now understand, I am not on Facebook but I found this site this morning of a DAV Chapter in Texas providing assistance to those in need as well as a Christmas Party for a Reserve Group and their Families.

No charge and all non paid volunteers.

25 years ago today: Operation Desert Storm began on Jan. 17, 1991, as Iraq refused to withdraw its forces. More than 500,000 allied military personnel deployed to the region, launching an intense aerial campaign and series of ground attacks.

A sad thing is that the VFW, DAV, America Legion are seeing the younger vets not joining.
The VFW post here in town is seeing declining membership and the American Legion post voted to sell the post to Costco but Costco built elsewhere.

A VFW post about 75 miles away closed its Hangar Lounge, Restaurant and Banquet Hall, putting up its building for sale and downsizing to a smaller location.

Presently, the VFW Post has more than 570 members, but over the years, the post quartermaster said the VFW has struggled to attract younger veterans who served in wars such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Every year, about 30 to 50 of the VFW's older veterans pass away, and its membership is not being replenished with younger service members, who are forming their own, less official groups, they said.

"At a time, we had over 1,000 members, but every year, it gets less and less,"

One thing I've heard is that caustic vets keeping other vets away. "Iraq, or Afghan, was not a war." "We've got bigger ...." A lot of Iraq and Afghan vets are looked down on by some of the super Hooah vets. This kills any desire to join. Gungho better-than-you vets will drive the VFW into extinction. It's a bunch of cliquish fire breathers that think of it as their personal clubhouse. Just my two.

Some folks just have to ReLive their "Glory Moments" to try and keep those memories Alive.... and just never Move On, in Real Life.... it is the same thing, as the High School FootBall King, who now works a "Louie's Tire Barn" yet wears his HS Letterman's Jacket, even though it is tattered, and nothing more than a RAG, today.... It is his WHOLE World, wrapped up in the cloth...

One of the reasons I rarely go to the hall these days. Saddens me that most of the azzholes are of my generation. No comparison to the warm and open welcome from the older WWII and Korean vets that I received when I joined the VFW.

I hate to say this, I really do...but I have seen similar behavior. It's almost like some 'nam vets are miffed that they are no longer the only "real" vets and not getting all the attention.

No Hall around here, but the DAV is very active and is supported by the local economy's business, civic groups and the local newspaper.
We see our new members, to be, first at the Office when they are seeking assistance from an honest source of information.

We have the fastest growing chapter in Texas and this has been the norm for the last 4 years.
There is a PTSD Group that meets one evening a week as well, this provides support and information as well as a way (see, no hall can be bad too) to meet other returning vets.
No hall so no ass hats.
It takes a will and a way which just means make a good showing at taking care of the Vets in the community. Even the local college has a Vet's Group and the Town Hall has a Texas VA Rep in the office three days a week.

Pretty much if you are there to help other vets, it's a good thing. I agree that some try to live on in the glory days. I believe if all you had was a small period of time in your life that you hang on to, then you wasted your life. I make memories everyday and will hold to a Glory Life. I understand being in the suck is defining and not much else compares, though I am not defined by that one experience. When I'm old and crusty, I will welcome all veterans of the Jupiter wars with an ear, a beer and information that will help them.
