As we are doing our spring cleaning and working on our projects throughout the summer, remember that there are many task around the home that need to be done as part of your normal maintenance and upkeep. Things get worn out, broken, storm damaged and so on.... time to get out there and ensure your home and your BOL, if you have one, are just as prepared to survive as you are:)

A Home Maintenance Checklist: An Incredibly Handy Tool to Keep Your House in Tip-Top Shape | The Art of Manliness

Here is a starting point checklist.... what else can you add to the list, that everyone should keep in mind? Resupply of winters firewood use, repair of flooded areas, brush clearing and so on......

Just reading that list exhausted me. Now I can see why condos with maintenance crews are so popular. And yes, I printed off the list. I will be going through it to see where I am at this weekend. I know the gutters need to be done.

Replace batteries in smoke/carbon dioxide detectors. I’d never heard this before, actually. I just assumed you changed it out when it started giving you the low battery beeping noise. This tip was in everything we researched, however. With something as important as this, you can’t be too careful, and batteries won’t break your bank. Change ‘em out every six months.

Changing the battery every 6 months started way back b4 detectors had a low battery alarm.

Modern detectors have an alarm when the battery gets low.

A Lithium-ion battery might last 5 years or more. An Alkaline battery will also last for years.

Some detectors come with these great batteries..........some may still come with Zinc–carbon batteries, aka

“heavy duty “ batteries and are not worth using. Also use a good battery.

Smoke detectors even the wired ones have an 8-10 year life. Some say you can clean the dust and grease that affects the sensor but most say just replace. Carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every 5 years but the two I just bought have a 10 year life.

Spring cleaning can be one of my least favorite time of the year. I don’t mind the cleaning part that much but seeing the amount of junk that gets accumulated over the year that makes me wonder - where did all that junk come from? This year I decided that instead of having it dumped I would have it recycled. I ordered a couple of rental bins from a bin rental company called red bins and then I hauled away the waste and got it recycled with the help of my recycling unit. There are actually a lot of ways where you could recycle at home and save money. Here is a blog by a bin rental company that mentions some tips on how to recycle at home

Do not forget to check the age of the detector. Home inspectors look at the stuff.

This is a great list. I learned that if on a well you should flush your water heater twice a year because of the minerals and sediment.

That's a good idea even on municipal supplies. Back in the day, I made it a point to flush the water heater annually, and was often surprised at the crap that accumulated over a year. I don't have nearly that problem on my well here.
